Description

E. C. OSTLIN.
ROWING MACHINE- APPLICATION FILED MAR. I2. 1917.
Patented Nov. 27, 191?.
llTE @TAd ELDOR C. OSTLIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Application filed. March 12, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELDoR C. Os'rLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bronx, New York city, in the county of Bronx, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ll-owing-lvlachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in exercising apparatus for gymnasiums and the like and has particular reference to rowing machines.
An object of the invention is the provision of a carriage in the form of a body which may be moved forwardly through the medium of relatively stationary propelling and guiding means.
Another object is the provision of an apparatus of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the present invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus constructed in accordance with the inven tion.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the movable carriage and associated parts.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Fig. 4: is an end view.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the shock absorbers employed in connection with the invention.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts the numeral 10 indicates the body or carriage having upon the bottom thereof the rollers 11 for supporting said body. Arranged near the longitudinal edges of the body are tracks 12 which are engaged by the rollers Specification of Letters Patent.

13 of the sliding seat 14: which supports the operator. The longitudinal edges of the seat 14 are provided with guide flanges 15 which engage the longitudinal edges of the body portion or carriage 10 to prevent displacement of the seat. Each end of the body is provided with a stretcher 16 having the shoes 17 for receiving the operators feet as is usual in machines of this charactor. Extending from each end of the body 10 in a diagonal direction is a pair of guiding rods 18 having eyes 19 at their outer extremities for receiving the guiding and propelling elements 20, preferably in the form of ropes. In setting up the apparatus these ropes 20 are extended from one end of a gymnasium to the other and are supporte in such position that the same extend on each side of the carriage 10 adjacent the seat 14 so that the operator may reach forward and grasp said ropes and pull upon the same to advance the carriage from one end of the ropes to the other. Upon reaching the ends of the ropes the eyes 19 contact the shock absorbers 21 in the form of coil springs surrounding the ends of said ropes so that damage to the carriage 10 will be prevented. After reaching one end of the ropes 20 the operator may reverse himself in the seat 14: and repeat the operation of propelling the carriage to the other ends of the ropes.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the invention contemplates the provision of a rowing machine which has advantages over those commonly used in that the carriage thereof may be propelled thus affording the opportunity of further amusement and exercise by having races. It will also be seen that the apparatus may be readily and quickly assembled and removed when not in use.
What is claimed is 1. An apparatus of the character de scribed comprising a movable carriage, guiding means carried thereby, parallel ropes engaging said guiding means on each side of said carriage, and fixed to a part which is stationary with respect thereto, and
shock absorbers arran ed at the ends of said ropes and adapts to be contacted by said uiding means.
2. in apparatus of the character described comprising a movable carriage, guiding means carried thereby, a sliding seat for said carriage, parallel ropes engaging said guidin means on each side of said carriage, and fixed to a part which is 10 stationary With respect thereto, and shock absorbers arranged at the ends of said ropes and adapted to be contacted by said guiding means.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of tWo witnesses.
