WILLIAM L. COOP AND JOSEPH O. BOMS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
EXERCISING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,792, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed February .34, 1835. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM L. (Door and J osnrn 0. Boris, citizens of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Exercising-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of gymnastic apparatus in which weights are raised and lowered by the person exercising, and in which the rope that operates the weight is doubled or compounded .in such a manner as to allow the handle grasped by the operator twice the motion of the weight, as will be more fully hereinafter described; and the object of our improvement is to prevent rotation of the weight and consequent fouling of the rope supporting and moving the same. \Ve attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional view of our exercising apparatus. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 00 00.. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are sections of modified form of guides. Fig. 6 is a side view of the weight on a weight-carrier of modified construction. Fig. 7 is a front view of a chest-weight in which rods form the guides. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 9 is a section of the same, as on line y y.
In this class of apparatus the rope A is secured at the top of the guides B, that steady the weight 0 in its motion, and passes around the pulley c on the carrier which supports said weight, and over the fixed pulley b to the handle or other attachment grasped by the operator. The weight 0, being suspended in the loop 7 formed in the rope A, if left to rotate, will prevent rotation of the weight 0. Said projections D may be either at the base of the weight 0, as is shown in Fig. 1, or at the top, or at both top and base, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
The guide B may be of any convenient formto suit the convenience or fancy of the deslgner.
We are aware that in a chest-weight apparatus the weight-carrier has been provided with guides to steady its motion, and we do not claim, broadly, an apparatus so constructed.
Having thus described our invention, We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the cord A, having one end fixed and the other passed over a pulley, b, to a movable handle, while its intermediate portion is formed into a depending loop, of the weight-carrier having its pulley a hung in said loop, the projections-D of said weight-carrier, and the vertical guides for said projections, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses. WVILLIAM L. COOP. JOSEPH O. BOMS.
\Vitnesses:
ALBERT J. THORNLEY, J AMES B. LOWRY.
