IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED WARDROBES AND BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,991, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. AUSTIN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Wardrobe and Bedstead, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail vertical section of my improved wardrobe andbedstead. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of one of the side boards taken through the line a: as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My inventionvhas for its object to improve the construction of my combined wardrobe and bedstead patented June 4., 1872, and numbered 127,546, so as to make it simpler in construction and more convenient in use; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the apparatus, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the outer case of the appara tus, the upper part of the front of which is closed by doors a and the lower part by the end board B of the bedstead. Within the case A is secured an inner case, which is not shown 7 in the drawing, and which is made smaller than the case A to form compartments between the bottoms and sides of the two cases.
The bottom compartment is designed to receive the spring-slats and the side compartments to receive the side rails O of the bedstead. With the outer ends of the side rails or boards 0 of the bedstead are connected two bars or arms, D E. The upper arm D is rigward, enters a vertical T-slot in t e end board B, and has a cross head or pin attached to its end to keep it in said slot and, at the same time, allow it to move up and down freely. The lower arm E is attached to the lower part of the end board B, projects upward, and is slotted to receive a pin attached to the lower part of the outer end of the side board 6. This construction, holds the side boards 0 from rocking or turning when extended, and, at
the same time, allows the said side boards to be turned up into a vertical position. To the outer side of the inner end of each of the side boards 6 is pivoted a grooved pulley, F, which rolls up and down in a groove, P, formed for that purpose upon the inner surface of the sides of the case A, the said groove being made dovetailed to keep the said pulley in place while moving up and down. To the inner end of each side board 0 is attached the end of a rope or cord, G, which passes up and is attached to a drum, H, attached to a shaft, which is pivoted to the upper part of the case A. One of the drums H is made double, and to its other part is attached a cord, 1, which is weighted, and passes over a guide pulley or pulleys, J, to bring it into such a position that it may be conveniently reached and operated to raise the side boards 0. To
the inner ends of the side boards 0 are attached the ends of another pair of ropes, K
which pass over guide-pulleys L at the bottom and top of the case A to bring them into such a position as to be easily reached and operated to draw the side boards 0 downward, and thus extend the bedstead.
The rope G may be used without the drum H and cord I, if desired.
M represents the spring-slats, the ends of which are inserted in longitudinal grooves N formed in the lower part of the inner sides of the side boards 0, and which are made continuous with grooves 0 formed in the inner sides of the lower part of the sides of the case A.
By this construction, when it is desired to close the bedstead the spring-slats M are pushed along the groove N into the groove 0; and when the bedstead is opened the said spring-slats are drawn out of the grooves 0 into the grooves N.
The slats M are connected with each other by tapes or webbing, so that when the first slat is drawn out into place the others may all be left in their proper relative positions. The slats M may be drawn out and in with cords, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The pulleys F, grooves P, and cords G K with their guide-pulleys, in combination with the ends of the side boards 0 and with the case A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth;
2. The grooves N in the inner sides of the side boards 0 of the bedstead, and the grooves boards 0 and with the end board B, substan- 0 formed in the inner sides of the sides of the tially as herein shown and described, and for case A, and made continuous with each. other, the purposes set forth. a substantially as herein shown and described, ROBT. M. AUSTIN. and for the purpose set forth. Witnesses:
3. The cross-head bar I) and the slotted bar J As. K. HAYES,
E, in combination with the ends of the side WM. P. HIBBERD.
