- Specification of Iletters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1917.
Application filed February 5, 1917. Serial No. 146,801.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, -THOMAS A. PAoE'r'rY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drainage-Platforms for Bottling-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in drainage devices, particularly those used in bottling works for carrying off the liquids which overflow during the process of bottling.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a stand for supporting a bottle capping machine of ordinary form, so constructed that it will readily carry off the liquids which are spilled on the machine.
An additional object is to provide a drainage stand or platform from which the bottle capping machine is readily removable.
With these general objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, and shown in the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a platform constructed in accordance with my invention and having a bottle capping machine mounted thereon;
Fig. 2-is a plan view of the invention showing the machine removed;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the plane of the line H of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In the several figures of the accompanying drawings showing my invention applied, the bottle capping machine 1 is of ordinary or any preferred construction, preferably having a substantially square base 2, the latter resting upon the drainage portion of my improved stand. The parts of this bottle capping machine are merely indicated broadly so as to show the relation of the parts thereof with the invention. Ordinarily the base 2 of the machine rests upon the ground or floor, and the liquids which are spilled from the bottles being capped by the mechanism at the top of the machine flow down the sides thereof and sanitary since the liquids attract various forms of insect life, etc. Myinvention overcomes this difliculty by raising the machine above the ground or floor and providing means for carrying away the overflow of liquid.
The invention comprises broadly a drainage portion 3 upon which the machine 1 is mounted, and a platform 4: on which the operator stands. The drainage portion 3 is preferably rectangular, or other shape similar to the base of the machine, and is formed of a plurality of 'ho'rizontalbars 5 which are integrally jointed at their opposite ends to form a rectangular frame 6, theouter dimensions of the latter being somewhat greater than the base 2 of the machine. This arrangement of the bars 5 leaves a rectangular opening 7 of relatively large size in the central part of the drainage member which is for a purpose to be later described. The upper faces of the bars 5 of the frame are inclined downwardly and inwardly to Ward this opening '7, so that any liquid which runs down the sides of the machine 1 will be drained toward said opening. To facilitate the drainage of'this liquid, a pair of transversely extending spaced apart grooves 8 are formed in the central portion of each side of the frame. These grooves are also inclined downwardly and inwardly from the outer edges of the frame toward the opening 7 Each pair of these grooves 8 is connected by a longitudinally extending drainage groove 9. Each of these last mentioned grooves is disposed adjacent the edges of the base 2, the edges of the latter preferably coinciding. with the inner edges of the grooves.
By constructing the frame 6 as just set forth, all liquid which drips from the machine or runs down the sides of the same will be drained toward the central opening 7 and into a drainage pan 10 which is positioned beneath the same. The edges of this pan have a water-tight engagement with the under side of the strips 5 of the frame, the pan being so constructed that its lowest point is approximately in the center thereof. An opening 11 is formed at this lowest point and a waste pipe 12 is COHHGQWQ thereto SQ that the waste liquids may be readily carried away to a sewer or the like.
Since the pan 10 and the pipe extending therefrom is disposed beneath the frame 6, the latter is spaced above the ground by means of the depending flanges 13 which extend from the outer edges of the frame. Attaching feet 1& are formed on the bottom edges of these flanges 13 so that the drainage stand may be secured in position.
The platform A which is disposed in front of the portion 3 of the invention is formed by extending the flanges 13 on the sides of the frame 6 beyond the front end thereof as shown at 15, thus providing extensions which are substantially the same width as the flanges and whose bottoms are in the plane of the bottoms of the latter. lhe upper edges of these extensions 15, however, are raised slightly above the top of the frame as shown at 15 and carry slats 16 of wood or similar material upon which the operator of the capping machine stands when operating the latter. The frame 6 with the flanges 13, the extension 15, and the attaching feet 14 are preferablycast integrally so as to produce a very simply constructed yet an extremely strong structure. If it is not convenient to cast all of these parts at one time and in one casting, the frame 6 may be formed separate from the platform.
In order that the machine may be detachably mounted upon the frame 6, suitable clamps 17 are provided, each of these clamps being substantially L-shaped in side elevation. The arm 18 of each clamp is longitudinally slotted as shown at 19 to receive a clamping screw 20, the latter extending through the bar 5. iVhen it is desired to secure the machine to the frame, the former is placed in the proper position on the latter with the edges of its base coinciding with the inner edges of the grooves 9, and the arms 18 of the clamps are placed over the said base. As the screws 20 are tightened, the outer ends of the arms 18 and other arms 21 tightly engage the base and frame respectively. As the operator stands upon the platform 4. he may readily reach the earner operating pedal 22 of the machine, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Various minor changes maybe made in the form and proportion of the several parts of this device and they may be made of various materials without departing from or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
I attach great importance to the relative locations of the longitudinal and transverse grooves 9 and 8 respectively, said longitudinal grooves being so positioned that they serve to accurately center the machine base 2, whereas the transverse grooves 8 permit a crowbar or the like to be readily inserted beneath the base to shift the same as required when installing.
I claim:
A machine support and drip collector comprising a rectangular horizontally disposed frame whose side bars are inclined downwardly and inwardly on their upper faces, said bars having longitudinal grooves in said faces positioned at the edges of the machine base to center said base when installing the device, and to receive any liquid dripping from said base, said upper sides of said bars also having transverse grooves leading from said longitudinal grooves through the inner edges of said bars, said transverse grooves serving to conduct all drippings from said longitudinal grooves and also permitting a crowbar or other suit able tool to be inserted beneath the machine base, a drip pan secured at its edges to the the liquid discharged from said transverse ,85 under side of said frame, for carrying. off
grooves, means for securing the machine base I to said frame, and a horizontal operators platform extending forwardly from sa1d frame and positioned in substantially the plane thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS AUGUSTUS PAOETTY.
