JOHN ros'rMA, or LOLETA, CALIFORNIA.
CAN-PUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
applicati@ mea December 27, 1919. seran no. '347,818.1l
To all whom t may concern: Y
4Be it known that I, JOHN Pos'rMA, a subject of Great,Britain, and a resident of4 Loleta, Humboldt county, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can-Punches, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention-has for itsobject the punching of cans to secure complete drainage of their contents in the most eiiicient manner and with the least effort and in shortest space of time. Y It has heretoforeV been customary in the punching of cans, especially those containing liquids, to drive or punch a hole into one end of the can, and then invert the can and drive or force a hole into the opposite end, one of these ends providing an outlet for the contents and the other an inlet for airas the contents are discharged.
'The forcingfof the hole as by a tool or instrument from Ythe outside when pressedagainstthe end of the can occasions, first a depression or Vbending inward with the punched openingY at the bottom of the concavity formed by said punching. When a can punched in this manner is inverted and l the contents are permitted to discharge by gravity, the opening through which they discharge Vprojects upward, thus providing a space within the can below the edges ofV Said opening within which space a portion of the contents remain, the cans are therefore not completely drained; By my invention I prefer to force a single punch through both covers of the can and during the same operation, thus punching one of the covers from the outside andthe second cover, that through which the contents are to be discharged, is punched Afrom the inside out-p wardly, so that the concavity formed in the cover in the last mentioned step is outwardly convex, the said concavity present-V ing a concave surface to the contents, and
therefore causing their drainagev toward the Y hole so punched from the inside outwardly, as in the case of a funnel, and complete drainage is therefore effected.
I also provide traveling ways in which the cans, after the punching abovermentioned,
I are caused to' travel, and from which ways they drain into a suitable trough or basin, and that while other cans are being acl- H vanced into position and beingl punched;
Vmain punch shaft is indicated-'at 8.
the can is made.
By referring to the accompanying` drawingws. my invention will be made clear:
Ligure l is a front view of my machine Patented Sept. 7, 1920. i
showing a series of cans in the position of being punched and drained.
Fig. 2 is a.- cross section of the line .Y g. showing a; can in the .position Vunder the punch andMiustv after the punching operation has been completed.
. Fig. 3 shows a can punched in accordance with my invention, the contentsbeing fully ldischarged therefrom. i
Throughout the gures'similar numerals referto identicalV parts.
The frame or standard of the machine is indicated yby the numeral l, on which is mounted one ofthe trough supports 2, 2 and which supports the trough or drainage hopper 3, locatedy so as/to receive the discharged Vcontents from the punchedcans.
QNumeral 4 isa supporting arm or bracket for the rcan ways 5, 5, on which the cans are to be punched, and after punching and during their drainage period, are caused to ad-v vance.
An inclosing housing within which the cans are'located during the punching operation is shown at 6, and islfor the purpose of preventing the can from rising with the punch after the punch has penetrated the topand bottom of the can. v Y
A can lin position under the punch, and on which the punching. operation has just been completed, is lindicated at' 7, and 'Ithe he latter is normally Vheld by the' spring 9 inthe Aposition shown in the figures, which spring compensates for the weight of the punch and Y its associatedmovable parts. I An operating lever is indicated at 10, piv oted at Il, and a set ring` for the spring Vis i vshown atV lf2, which I have shown pinned to Vthe punch shaft, but which may be made adjustable if desired.
-I prefer to arrange the punch shaft within Y 'the bushing' l3,.wli`i`chis held in place bythe set screw. 414, and onthe lower end'ofV the Vpunch shaft I have shown `the punch i5,V v'which may be made Vof any Vconvenient sizeV and may be fitted tothel punch shaft, as by the screw thread 16,'so thatiany sized punch may be 'fittedV asV required Vto suit the charac ter of the can contents, or the metal ofwhich The can Ways 5, 5 are preterablyextended and provided with a further support 17, so as to'give a suflicient trackage in the ways 5, 5, to allow the necessary .time interval for the can punched at 7 to rcompletely drain before its arrival at the final position 2l.
At 18 I have shown a pail in which .the
canned contents are ultimately discharged as from the hopper 3 through the outlet 20.
The shaft 8 Vvprefer vto provide -With a slot as shown at through which the lever vl() may-beipassed The bushing 13 is slotted as at 26,26, sothatthe lever 10 may freely swing within said slots during the `period of verticaltravel of the shaft 8.
The operation isfasiollovvs: A y
rlhe cans are passed from the position 27 itothepos'ition shown at 7 ,fthe lever 'lO is Athen depressed, the punch l5 penetrating the top '.28 of 'the can? -and Ipassing ondown- Ward and penetrating the bottom of the said can, as ait'2l, thus causing a concavity in the 'top and in the bottom, as
shown in Fig. 3. Immediately upon 1the YWithdrawal of the *punchY l5 the contents ofthe canwvill begin Ito discharge vinto the trough 3 and the said draining Will continue during thetime'vthat the can-travelsalongIthe Ways 5, 5, and beforeits arrival at thepositioni21`1t-Willhave `iully discharged itsv contents.
The cansare to be .pushed romthejiosition 27 Within the flhousingi :for punching and such Imovement ilforces. simultaneously theother cans in the Ways 5, 5, one step farther along for each added can.
Between the can Ways 5, 5, is the open slot 29 throughwhcli the openings of the bottoms of all the cans are exposed with their downward Haring Voutlets so that the con- `Vtents are discharged fully therefrom and 'can and continue vthrough lthecanand its` contents' and to punch a holealso inthe bottoin of said can inccinbination ivith-abase -meinber and travelingfmeans vthereon adapted to move cans successivelyT under and away *from said punch and a member adapt- `edito restrainthe can "from v'upward nievement as the punch is Withdrawn Y'from the can, and'nieansfoi operating said punch.
2. A can punch as set forth in claim l and yhaving-a trough-under the cans adaptedto collect the contents thereof as drained from 'the cans. Y .Y Y
` lil-testimony whereof'Ihave'hereunto set my :hand at Loleta, `Humboldt county, Galt fornia, this 22nd` day of December '1919. l
