Description

N. G. FORMAN.
RULE HOLDER.
AFPLICATIDN FILED DEC-11.1916.

NELLIEG. FORD IAN, OF MIDVALE, UTAH.
RULE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 2Q, 1917,
Application filed December 11, 1916. Serial No. 136,253.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, NELLm G. FORMAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Midvale, county of Salt Lake, and State. of
Utah, have invented certain, new. and useful Improvements in Rule-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rule holders for garment pockets.
My invention relates to that general class of device comprising means adapted to be used in connection with trousers or overalls pockets for holding a rule, tool, or other device in convenient position to permit ready removal without liability of the rule or tool falling out of the pocket. Devices of this character are of much service to carpenters, masons, and mechanics generally.
My object is the provision of a novel rule or tool holder of the class specified which will properly grasp the rule or tool when in the pocket, and tightly hold itself by engagement with the mouth of the pocket, without injuring the pocket in any manner and which may be readily applied to the pocket or removed therefrom.
Being devoid of points, prongs, or other penetrating devices, my rule holder does not injure the mouth of the pocket or the body portion or lining thereof and, while firmly holding itself in position and being readily inserted, may be quickly and easily removed without resulting damage. Furthermore, by the employment of an improved arrangement of clips for holding the device in position, a duplex securing or gripping action is obtained by engagement with the mouth of the pocket, resulting in square corners being formed in the pocket whereby it is unnecessary to open the mouth of the pocket with the fingers when inserting the rule or removing it, thus obviating fumbling and incident annoyance and loss of time. The inner or bottom portion of the device is of improved, arched, form which adapts it to form a support for the rule and a firm support for the side arms, as also permitting safe and easy insertion and withdrawal of the device from the pocket without possibility of damage to the latter. The arms are curved and approach each other in a manner adapting them to firmly, yet releasably, bind on the rule so that the latter is securely held and cannot fall out of the pocket even though the wearer assumes a stooping posture.
I am. aware that modifications might be resorted to in carrying out myinvention, particularly in respectv to the exactform. of
the clips which engage the mouth. of the pocket at the corners thereof and-I'do not, therefore, desire that the disclosure of the invention herein given be considered asre striotive of the invention as itisto be considered only as illustrative thereof although it represents the present preferred ernbodiment of the invention v In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the holder in a pocket and a rule held thereby;
gig. 2, a detail edge view of the holder; an
Fig. 3, a front view thereof. 7
The rule holder is of a height and width adapting it for proper cooperation with the usual hip, or other, pocket 1 of the trousers or overalls 2.
My rule holder comprises arms 3 having oppositely facing clips or hooks i at their upper, free, ends and connected by an arch 5 at their lower ends. The arch 5 is joined to the arms 3 by rebent or looped parts 6 constituting blunt supporting feet which may bear against the bottom of the pocket 1.
The hooks or clips 4 are adapted to slip over and embrace the fiap or pocket mouth 7 and to form square corners therein as shown in Fig. 1. This result is obtained by reason of the oppositely pointing disposition of the hooks or clips 4 and the fact that they are of a suitable width to cause the pocket mouth to spread. The pocket mouth is, therefore, held open and it is unnecessary to finger the pocket when inserting or removing the rule or other tool or appliance 8 which is held by the device. The arms 3 are bowed or curved and approach each other sufficiently close so that, when the rule is inserted between them, they bind frictionally on the sides of the rule and hold it securely, subject to quick and easy removal when desired. The lower end of the rule is supported by the arched bottom 5.
Having no points, prongs, or projections which penetrate or engage the pocket or the garment, my rule holder does not injure the pocket in any manner nor is its removal interfered with should it be desired to take it out of the pocket. The arch 5 and looped the device and, a suitable support from which the arms 3 extend. Being blunt, the feet 6 cannot injure the pocket or punch a hole therein.
Preferably the device is formed from a single piece of resilient flat material to afford the requisite springiness to the arms 3 and the clips 4: so that the former readily grasp the rule and the latter securely engage the flap or mouth of the pocket and also open it so that no fumbling occurs when removing or inserting the rule.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An article holder for pockets comprising connected, relatively wide, resilient arms adapted to grasp the article and terminating in relatively wide hooks or clips which eX- tend in opposite directions and are adapted to receive and grasp the flap or mouth of the pocket at its corners and to form square or wide corners therein.
2. An article holder for pockets comprising resilient arms adapted to grasp the article, and a base having rebent or looped parts connecting it to said arms, said rebent or looped parts constituting blunt feet.
3. An article holder for pockets comprising resilient arms adapted to grasp the article, and an upwardly arched base connecting said arms.
4. An article holder for pockets comprising resilient arms adapted to grasp the article, and an upwardly arched base joined to the arms by rebent feet.
5. The herein described article holder for pockets comprising resilient holding arms, an upwardly arched base oined to the arms by rebent 0r looped parts constituting blunt supporting feet, and clips at the upper portions of the arms, said ciips facing in opposite directions and being adapted to engage the mouth of the pocket, and to form square or wide corners therein, the entire holder being formed from relatively wide material.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
NELLIE Gr. FORMAN.
