CHARLES H. FRICKIE, OF WATERSMEET, MICHIGAN.
BASIN TASTE-VALVE.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
Application led March 30, 1917. Serial No. 158,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHAnLns H. Fnionm, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVatersmeet, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented Vnew and useful Improvements in Basin Vaste-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to controlling means for plugs of wash basins or other receptacles.
The object of the present invention is to provide means of the above description which may be readily secured to a basin or other receptacle, the dev ice being capable of adjustment to varying conditions, so that it is not necessary to specially construct the device for the particular receptacle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a plug controlling means in which the plug may be securely held within the discharge opening and a rod which carries the plug may be rocked to lock the same without disturbing or removing the plug from its seat.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which is of neat and simple construction, easy of operation and may be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the following novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Fignre 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of a receptacle provided with a discharge opening and having the improved plug controlling means secured thereto;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a detailed cross sectional view showing the manner of guiding the rod within the guiding device.
The invention is herein shown as applied to a wash basin, a portion of which is shown at 10, the said basin being of any preferred construction and includes a discharge opening 11 which is ordinarily controlled by means of a rubber or other plug, which is usually secured to the basin by means of a chain, for the purpose of preventing its loss.
For the purpose of providing a more convenient means for operating this plug, there is provided the following described invention, which includes the supporting bracket 12, which is adapted to be secured to the rim or edge ofthe basin by means of screws or other fastening devices 15. As shown this bearing bracket 12 is arch shaped and is formed with a central opening 14 for the purpose of receiving the projecting portion 15 of a guide bracket 16. This bracket is adapted to be adjustably secured within the opening 14 by means of a set screw 17 which permits of both a pivotal and lateral adjustment lof the bracket, in order that it may be properly positioned with respect to the discharge opening 11.
The bracket 16 includes the vertically disposed arm 17 and the guide extensions 18 and 19, the extension 19 being in the form of a sleeve 20, whose opening 21 is in line with an opening 22 formed in the guide eX- tension 18.
Mounted for vertical movement in the openings 21 .and 22 is a jointed rod 23, which consists of a lower section 24 and an upper section 25, which is pivotally secured together as shown at 26. The lower section 24 is provided with an offset portion 27, to which is secured the plug 28 and when the guide bracket is properly positioned within the supporting bearing this plug will be directly above the passage opening 11, so that a downward movement of the rod 23 will cause the seating of the plug. In order to retain the plug in such seated position to prevent the discharge of the water from the receptacle, the section 25 of the rod is formed with oppositely located notches 29, which, when the rod is depressed are adapted to be engaged within a slot 30 formed in the guide extension 18 and in communication with the opening 22. By forming the rod 23 in sections and pivoting them as described, the upper section 25 may be moved into locking engagement with the slot 30 without disturbing the plug 28, from its seat, the length of the sleeve 20 serving to prevent any movement of the lower section 24 of the rod.
Interposed between the sleeve 20 and a pin 81, which is carried by the upper section 25 of the rod is a spring 82, which surrounds the said rod and tends to normally hold the plug unseated in the opening 1l. The lower section 24 of the rod is formed with a guide groove 33 and the sleeve 20 carries a set screw 24", the end of which enters this groove to prevent any rotation of the rod, so that the plug 28 will be always maintained in position for engagement with the discharge opening'.
It is believed from the foregoing when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the construction, and operation of the invention will be clearly understood. The right is reserved to make such changes in the form and proportion of the invention as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed, is;
l. The combination with a receptacle provided with a discharge opening, of a sup porting bearing secured to said receptacle,
a guide bracket mounted in saidl bearing for lateral and pivotal adjustment, a spring operated rod mounted for movement in said bracket and a plug carried by said rod adapted to close said opening.
2. The combination with a receptacle provided with a discharge opening, of a guide bracket secured to said receptacle, a spring operated rod mounted for movement in said bracket, a plug carried by the lower end of said rod and adapted to be seated within said opening, means for locking said rod t-o 30 prevent accidental displacement of said plug and means whereby the upper end of said rod may be rocked to lock the same without unseating the plug.
In testimony whereotl I aHiX my signature.
CHARLES H. FRICKIE.
