HERMENEGILD ROTTLER, OF RAYMOND, IOWA.
WASTE-PLUG LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 22, 1911.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Serial No. 616,133.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMENEGILD ROTT- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raymond, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Waste-Plug Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to wash-bowl attachments, and more particularly to the class of waste plug regulating devices.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the waste plug or stopper may be readily and easily manipulated for the opening and closing of the waste pipe in a washbowl, without causing the hands of the operator to contact with the water held or when poured therein.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which a waste plug or valve will be held in such a manner that it will be guided into or away from its seat within a waste pipe, thus obviating the handling thereof by the hands of an operator, the plug being removable, whereby the same may be replaced by a new one, if it becomes worn or defective for use.
A further object 'of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the guide or plunger rod supporting the waste plug or valve is held against rotation, but is easily slidable for effecting the opening and closing of the waste pipe.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, capable of being applied to a wash-bowl, and that is thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illus' trated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
1n the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through an ordinary wash-basin or bowl, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the casing slidably supporting the guide rod or plunger. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4' is a detail perspective view of the plug and the rod for operating the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through the plug. Fig. 6 is an inner end view of the supporting stem prior to the expanding thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a suitable receptacle, such as a wash bowl or basin, provided with the usual outlet or plug or valve seat 6, into which opens a waste pipe 7, the latter being connected to the bowl or basin in the ordinary well-known manner. This outlet 6 is normally closed by a plug or valve, comprising a resilient body 8 surrounding the stem of a bolt member 9, which has connection with the regulating device, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The regulating device comprises a tubiform casing or sleeve 11, provided medially of its length with a supporting stem or arm 12 projecting at right angles therefrom, the
stem having its free end split to form slots 13. The split end of the arm or stem 12 is outturned to form gripping flanges 1 1. Formed eXteriorly upon the stem or arm 12, at its free end, are screw threads 15 engaged by an adjustable nut 16, the stem being passed through a suitable opening formed in the basin or bowl 5, and the nut is turned in a direction to bind against the inner face of the bowl, while the flanges 14 bind against the outer face of the bowl, thereby mounting the sleeve or casing in the latter.
Slidably fitted within the casing or sleeve 11 is a lifter, preferably constructed from a single strand of suitable wire 17, the same being of rectangular shape in cross section. The sleeve or casing 11 is contracted at diametrically opposed sides, as at 18, so as to form a seat for the wire 17 and prevent its turning in the said casing or sleeve when being slid therethrough, one end of the wire being formed with an eye 19 engaging the bolt member 9, while the opposite end of the rod is formed with a ball-like handle 20, the said wire 17 being bent into substantially arcuate shape to conform to the shape of the wash-basin or bowl 5, thereby permittmg the plug or valve to be seated in the outlet or removed therefrom when the valve rod or plunger is actuated.
Instruck from the sleeve or casing 11 at the front thereof is a bowed spring 21, the free end of which frictionally engages the wire 17 to hold the same in its seat within said sleeve or casing and to sustain the said wire in its adjusted position.
The flanged end of the stem 12 is outwardly tapered and arranged within the slot 13 therein is a wedge-shaped spreading member 22, the slots being also outwardly tapered and formed on this member 22 at diametrically opposite points are lugs 23, the latter being arranged in the path of movement of the nut 16 and adapted to be engaged thereby when adjusted toward the flanged end of the stem 12, so that the wedgeshaped member will be displaced within the slots 13, causing the tapered end to spread laterally, thus securely locking the stem to the body of the bowl, whereby the attachment may be permanently mounted thereon.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood, without requiring a more extended explanation, and therefore the same has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
In combination, a basin having a drain opening and an opening in its wall, a split sleeve fitting in said wall opening and provided with gripping flanges on its inner end to engage said Wall, a conical expander movable longitudinally in said split sleeve and provided with lateral projections, a nut threaded on said sleeve and adapted to engage the projections to move said expander in said sleeve and hold said sleevein'locked relation with said wall, a guide carried by said sleeve and a rod movable in said guide and carrying a stopper on its lower end adapted to close the drain opening.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
