FASTENING MEANS FOR BARREL HEADS. APPLICATION FILED MAY 22. 19 17.
OSCAR L. WEINRICH, 0F BURLINGTON, IOWA.
FASTENING MEANS FOR BARREL-HEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
?atented Nov. 13, 1917.
Application filed May 22, 1917. Serial No. 170,263.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osoan L. \Vnrnmorr, a citizen of the United States, resident of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Fastening Means for Barrel-Heads; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention has relation to means for fastening the heads of barrels or casks in position covering the top thereof, having for its object the provision of improved means for this purpose, designed to permit of the barrel head being easily and quickly removed and replaced in position when the barrel is being filled or emptied.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of a barrel with the head thereof romoved and showing one member of the invention secured within the open end of the barrel; Fi 2 is a detail bottom plan view of the barrel head having the other member of the invention secured thereto, and Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary sectional View of the invention as applied, the section being taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 2.
In these drawings the numeral 2 designates the head of the barrel, and 3 is an annular member, formed usually of wire, said member secured to the inside of the end of the barrel by staples l, or the like. The wire annulus is provided with a plurality of inwardly bent horizontal extensions or portions 5, upon which the head of the barrel is designed to rest.
The barrel head has, secured to the under side thereof by staples 6, a fastening memher 7, also formed of wire and provided with horizontal radial outward extensions 8, the latter formed each of two parallel branches 8, projecting also downwardly at their free ends at 9, said ends having transverse connections 8 and spaced apart from the lower surface of the barrelhead at 10, the body of said member, formed by the horizontal extensions 8, being in contact with the lower surface of said head.
In securing the head in position, after it comes to rest upon the extensions 5 of the member 3, the head is rotated bodily within the end of the barrel, until the downwardly and outwardly extending free ends 9 of the extensions 8 pass under the inward extensions 5 of the cooperating fastening member.
The head is released by a continued or reverse rotation, until the extensions of the two members are disengaged from one another.
I claim:
1. In a barrel head fastening device, a wire annulus adapted to be secured to the inside of the barrel near one end thereof, said annulus provided with inwardly projecting loops, and a member adapted to be secured to the barrel head and provided with radial extensions each having parallel branches, said branches having downwardly projecting free ends and transverse connections engaging under the loops of said annulus.
2. The combination with a barrel having a head, of a wire annulus secured to the inside of the barrel near one end thereof and having inwardly projecting loops, and a wire member secured to said head below the same and provided with radial extensions each having parallel branches, said branches having downwardly projecting free ends and transverse connections engaging under the loops of said annulus.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR L. WEINRICH.
