CARD-FILING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRANCIS HARPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, Shelby county, and State of Tennessee, have invented and discovered certain new anduseful Improvements in Card-Filing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to apparatus for filing index cards, or the like, and consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claims.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a card holding receptacle wherein the cards are collected in a neat, compact form and readily accessible for individual inspection, and in which the cards may be separately placed and removed.

A further purpose of the invention consists in providing a holder for filing signature cards in banks, in which the cards are grouped under the usual initial headings and in such a manner that the respective card groups may be readily brought into position for handling, and the cards thereof conveniently held separated without the employment of spacing devices or finders.

The invention is described by way of illustration in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, the apparatus consists of a supporting frame 1, having suitable bearings 2 for journaling the shaft 3 of the drum 4. that carries the several card holding frames. The means for mounting the card holders on the drum 4 consists of a rim or band 5 that is supported thereon by a plurality of radially disposed spacmg members 6 (see Fig. 5), or in any other suitable manner.

constructed preferably of sheet metal, are provided for holding the individual cards on the drum, and said card frames 7 have thelr respective upper and lower edges turned inwardly, as at 8 and 9, to form grooves for receiving the cards and permittlng of their convenient removal. The lower edge 10 of each card frame'is constructed with extended portions 11 that are bent as at 12 to provide bearings for the rod orpin 13 that passes therethrough and through the underside of the band 5 of the drum, after the manner shown in Fig. 3. The pin 13 has a head 14: that stops against one end of the pin bearing 12, and by means of this head said pin is adapted to be conveniently withdrawn to remove the frame 7 to insert a new card.

The card carrying frame is adapted to be conveniently rotated on its axis, for bringing the desired card group into position for inspection or handling, by a pair of side frames that may be conveniently engaged. The frames consist of a pair of annular rods 15 disposed on either side of the card frames, and which are secured to the walls 1 of the drum by the radially disposed bars 16, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

It will be seen from the foregoing that with having all the cards of the system arranged in circular formation, economy of space is obtained, and that any desired group of cards may be conveniently brought into position for inspection or handling; and that the individual card frames may be moved by sliding on the drum, and, further, that the card frames will remain in separated position (see Fig. 1) without requiring the use of blocks or other spacing devices which are usually employed to mark locations in the present system of card filing.

It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. An apparatus for filing index cards comprising a rotatable drum, an annular band mounted on the drum and radially spaced therefrom, a plurality of card hold ing frames, and rods for detachably mount ing said card holding frames to slide on said annular band, substantially as set forth.

2. An apparatus for filing index cards comprising a rotatable drum, an annular band mounted on said drum and radially spaced therefrom, a plurality of card holding frames constructed of sheet metal and having bearing members, and rods passing through said bearing members and under said band detaohably mountin said frames to slide on the band, substantially as set forth.

3. An apparatus for filing index cards Comprising a rotatable drum having an annular portion radially spaced therefrom, a plurality of card holding frames, rods for detaehably mounting said card holding frames to slide on said annular portion, a plurality of radially disposed bars secured to the drum on either side of said annular portion and a pair of annular rods secured to said radial bars and therewith providing handgripping devices for turning the drum, substantially as set forth.
