IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. Goonnrncn, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and "aluable Improvement in Lamp-Extinguisher; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Ifigure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a transverse central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are details.
My invention relates to extinguishers for kerosene-lamps; and the novelty consists in .the hereinafter-described construction and argrangement of devices which operate automat; iically to extinguish the light in the event of :the accidental falling or tilting of the lamp.
The object of my invention is to prevent explosions.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents an ordinary burner for kerosenelamps, incasing the wick-tube B. O designates a sliding sleeve which fits the wick-tube near its upper end, and which is constructed with two oblique arms, I, projecting from opposite sides in an upward direction, as shown. I) designates a bent rod, which is constructed with a ring, d, at its upper end, encircling the tube B. The rod is journaled to lugs D, projecting from the base-plate 0f the burner through a slot, 01 in which passes the rod, as shown inFig. 2. To the lower end of the rod a weight, E, is secured.
It will be seen that when the lamp is tilted the rod is held in position by the weight, which is governed by the force of gravitation. The ring d is thus brought into contact with one of the arms 01 of the sleeve 0, and the sleeve raised above the top of the wick projecting from the wick-tube, thereby extinguishing the light before the contents of the lamp can escape.
The ring d may be adapted to operate by bending it up on either side of the rod toward the arms d. In this way a slight tilting of the lamp will cause the light to be extinguished.
1 claim as my invention- The pendulum D E, having the ring d, and journaled to the burner A, in combination with the wick-tube B and the sliding sleeve G,l1aving the upwardly and outwardly-inclined arms cl, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. GOODRIDGE.
