Be itkn'own that T, PHILIP JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrick, in the county of Lincoln and State of Oklahoma, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Comb-Cleaners,'of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates'to improveiients'in combs, and it consists in the constructions, combinations, and arrangements -herein described and claimed. f

An object of my inventionis' to provide a comb including'a sheath or casing'adapted to be fitted and clamped over thespine of the comb, said sheath including grids adapted to enter the spaces between the comb teeth, so that'after continued'use of the comb, the sheath may be loosened and moved outwardly whereupon theflgrids will remove all accumulations from thcteeth of the comb.

Another object of my invention is to provide a sheath for the purpose specified, including hinged side members having a'clasp, said side members being adapted to engage the sides of the comb spine andthe clasp being adapted to secure the sheath in position upon the comb. f

Other objects and advantages will appear from the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the comb illustrating the application of my invention,

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a comb showing the sheath or casing in section, and

Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing, it will be observed that the comb includes the spine 1' from which the teeth 2 project. The spine 1 includes the enlarged end teeth 3 which form supporting members for a portion of the comb cleaning device about to be described.

The cleaning device consists of a body 4 having a plurality of grids 5 which are adapted to enter the spaces between the comb teeth 2. As will be observed in Fig. 2, one of the grids 5 occupies each space between the teeth 2 so that when the device at is removed in a manner and for purposes more fully to be explained, all accumulations of foreign matter upon the teeth 2 will be removed.

smooth and unbroken configuration 'of the comb as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Fig. 1. It will be obvious that were-it not for the provision of 'the end sheaths 10, that the line of demarkation where the sheath portion a is'divided as at 11, edges would result which would not only be rough to the touch causing the hair of the users head to be caught therein,-but would also form a lodgment for undesirable accumulations of dirt. p Theoperation and use of the device is as follows: The sheath 4 is first applied to a comb so that the grids 5 will enter the spaces between the teeth 2 and lie at the base of the teeth where they join with thespine 1. The sheaths 10 are then drawn over the teeth 8 at the same time since they form an integral part of the sheath structure.

The hinged sides 6 of the comb are then moved upon their hinges 7 so that the curved portions 8 will lie upon the curved upper portion of the spine 1 when the spring clasp 9 is fastened as will be evident from the drawing. lVith continued use the teeth 2 will of course become more or less filled with accumulations of foreign matter. The ordinary manner of cleaning the comb is hardly ever satisfactory because it cannot be done with comparative ease not to speak of the invariablesoiling of ones fingers and clothing. With the use of my device a clasp 9 is simply unfastened, the hinged members 6 swung outwardly and the grid body 5 is moved downwardly when as above eX- plained, the accumulations on the teeth 2 will be scraped off. The cleaning of the grid 5 will be a comparatively simple matter since it can be immersed in boiling water to loosenthe dirt thereon. The grid 5 being accessible will permit the ready brushing of the dirt therefrom. i

It should also be observed that the sheath at including the grid members 5 is made of resilient material which together with the resilient nature of the teeth 2 will work together to secure the effective removal of the foreign matter from the teeth. It should also be understood that while the construction and arrangement of device as illustrated in the drawing is that of a generally preferred form, obviously modifications and changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.

1. In a cleaning device, the combination with acomb having teeth, a sheath having grids adapted to normally be disposed at the base of the, teeth, hinged side portions on the grids, and a clasp for joining the hinged side members upon the comb.

2. In a cleaning device, thecombination with a comb havin a spine and teeth, of a sheath having gri s adapted to enter the spaces between the teeth and normally lie at the base of the teeth, side members hinged to the grids, end sheaths, and a clasp for securing the hinged side members about the spine of the comb.

3. In a cleaning device, the combination with a comb having a spine and teeth, of a sheath having grids adapted to enter the spaces between the teeth and normally lie at the base of the teeth, side members hinged to said grids, end sheaths, and means for releasably retaining said side members in set positions. 7 5. In a cleaning device, the combination with a comb having a spine and teeth, a sheath including end sheath members for engaging the end teeth of the comb, grids adapted to enter the spaces between the teeth and normally lie at the bases thereof, side members hinged at opposite sides of the sheath including curved portions for engaging the upper edge of the spine, and means for holding said spine members in set positions.

6. In a cleaning device, the combination with a comb having teeth, a sheath having grids adapted to normally be disposed of the base of the teeth, hinged side portions on the grids, means releasably retaining said side members in set positions whereby when said side members are released they may be swung outwardly so as to entirely remove said grids from engagement with, the teeth, for cleaning the comb.
