To all whom it may concern Be itknownthat LJoi-rn H. BURNS, a citizen of the United States,res1d1ng at helm,

in the county of Thurston and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Work-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. p This invention relates to certain improvements in work holders, and it is an object of the inventionto provide a novel and im-- proved device of this general character es pecially designed and adapted for use in connection with doors, windows or the like I when it is desired to brace the same.

Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a work holder of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be compacted within a minimum of spacewhen not in use and whereby the same may be applied in operative position with convenience and facility.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved work holder whereby, certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and other wise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.

In order that "my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a work holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a sec ond position of certain of the parts of the device being indicated by dotted lines;

Fig. 2 is a view in bottom plan of my improved work holder in a folded or compacted adjustment; and

Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail View illustrating certain features of the invention as herein embodied.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated strip of material having its forward end upturned, as at 2, to afi ord a stop against which the work is adapted to abut and said strip 1 adjacent the upturned portion 2 is provided with the depending penetrating member 8 which is adapted to impinge a supporting surface so as to prevent movement of the strip 1 when the work is being operated upon and es pecially during aplaning operation.

Arranged transversely of the strip 1 at a pointrearwardly of the upturned portion 2 is the plate 1 which extends beyond the op posits faces of the strip 1 and has one of its end portions upturned, as at 5, andpivotally secured to the extended portions of the plate 4 are the elongated strips 6 and 7 The strip 6'has disposed therethroughadjacent its opposite ends the upstanding threaded members, S with which coact the winged clamp- 7 ing nuts 9 adapted to engage the extremities of the holding member H. As herein emhodied,'the holding member H comprises a vertical strip 10 having its lower extremities terminating in an outwardly disposed and perpendicularly related extension or extremity 11 adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the strip 6 and provided with a longitudinally disposed slot '12 through which one'of the threaded members 8 extends. The upper end portion of the strip 10 is returned, as at 1 1, and is then extended mitwardly and downwardly on an incline, as at 15, and terminates in the extension or extremity 1(3 perpendicularly related to the strip 10 and provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 17 through which the second threaded member 8 is directed. By this arrangement. it will be perceived that the holding member H may be readily and conveniently adjusted relative to the strip 1 or more particularly the work adapted to be engaged by my device. It is also to he observed that the strip 6 has its pivoted extremity resting upon the upper surface of the plate a and has its outer or free end provided with the depending lip or flange 18 wh reby the device may be properly set upon a supporting surface wlthout interference being offered by the heads 19 of the 100 threaded members 8.

The strip 7 underlies the plate '4: and has its outer end returned, as at 20, to afford a spring action and is then extended upwardly and. inwardly, as at 21, on a predetermined 105 is adapted to en age and whereby said 110 work will be efiectively held between the holder H and the holder H as it will be perceived that the work when inserted between the holders'l-l and H will contact with the flange or lip 23 and cause the holder H to move toward the holder H. It will also be readily appreciated that the normal position of the holder 1 under the influence of the spring 20 affords a separation between the upper extremities of the holders H and H, or more particularly the strips 10 and 22, which facilitates the insertion of the won: between the strips 10 and it will be understood that the holder ll comprises the strip 22 and its concomitant parts. It isv also to be observed that the lip or flange is adapted to engage the upper face of the plate a inwardly of the flange or hp 5 and said flange or lip 5 serves to limit the outward spring movement of the strip 22.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a work holder constructed in accordance with my inventionis ct an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the con venience and facility with which it may be ass mbled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myselt to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.

1 claim: 1. A work holder comprising an elongated strip provided with a stop, and work engaging members pivotally engaged with said strip at a point inwardly of the stop, one of said work engaging members comprising a strip resiliently supported by the engaging member normally maintained elevated and on an upward and outward incline relative to the coacting work engaging member, the lower extremity of said vertical strip terminating in an inturned lip adapted to be engaged by the work when inserted between the engaging members, whereby the strip is moved downwardly and toward the coacting engaging member.

A. work holder of the character described comprising an elongated strip provided with a stop, a plate disposed transversely of the strip and extending beyond opposite sides thereof, one end portion or the plate being provided with an upturned lip, work engaging members pivotally engaged with the plate at opposite sides of the strip, one of said work engaging members including a resiliently supported verti cal strip normally maintained elevated and on an upward and outward incline, the lower extremity or" which being provided with an inturned lip adapted to rest upon the plate inwardly of the lip. of the plate, said'last named lip being engageable with the work when inserted between the engaging members, whereby the strip is moved downwardly and toward the coacting engaging member, the first named lip preventing outward movement of the lower end of the resiliently supported strip when in its lowered position. y

3. A work holder comprising two relatively spaced work engaging members, one of said work engaging members including an elongated strip of material having its outer end returned and continued upwardly on a predetermined incline and terminating in a downwardly disposed strip adapted to contact with the work inserted between the work engaging members, the lower end of the downwardly disposed strip being free and terminating in an. inwardly disposed lip adapted to be engaged by the work for forcing the strip downwardly and in a di rection toward the coa'cting work engaging members.
