ATTACHMENT FOR BlLLlARD-TABLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,531, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed April 28, 1887. Serial No. 236,489. (No model.)
-vented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Billiard-Tables,of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a device to be attached to a billiardtable or any gaining-table on which is stretched the coverto protect the baize covering of the table from dust, 820., when not in use.
The invention consists in providing sliding and adjustable brackets-around the edge of the table, adapted, when not in use, to be pushed in under or close to the edge of the table, and when needed to be drawn out, elevated, and have the cover spread or stretched thereover.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table provided with our improvedIsupports or stretchers, and having a portion of the cover broken away to show the same. Fig. 2 is an end view of the table. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the brackets l0wered and pushed in out of the way. Fig. 4 is a section through one arm of thebracket. Fig. 5 is a detail view to show a modified form of theadjusting device forthe arms ofthebracket. Fig. 6 is a similar view with the bracket raised.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates the table-top, on the under side of which are secured the guide-blocks B B, having the grooves G therein, parallel with the top of the table, and the grooves D, inclined downwardly and inwardly from the edges of the table.
E designates the bracket, having the arms F F, comprising the horizontal portion f and the upwardly and outwardly inclined portions f, the outer ends of the said portionsf being bentlaterally outward, as atf and having a spring actuated roller, G, journaled therebetween. This spring-actuated roller is similar to those now commonly employed on windowshades. On the said spring-roller is secured or rolled the cover for the table, adapted, when needed to cover the table, to be drawn across the same and secured to the bracket on the op posite side thereof, having a stationary bar, G, therein. The horizontal portions of the arms of the brackets are adapted to enter the horizontal slots or grooves O of the guide-blocks, two of the said blocks being provided for each side of the table, and when the cover which is rolled on one of the brackets is drawn across the table the edges thereof will not rest upon the table, but will be supported by the strength of the spring-roller at the sides and kept from sagging. The inclined portions of the bracket arms are adapted to allow the roller, when pushed in out of the way, to be about on a level with the upper surface of the table, or slightly below the same, and when it is desired to arrange the said brackets to have the cover spread, draw the same out and insert the horizontal portions of the arms in the inclined grooves or slots D, thus holding the roller G elevated above and away from the edge of the table, so that when the cover H is spread or stretched over the said table it will be held slightly above the surface of the table in the proper position to shield the same from dust, 820.
It will be seen that the cover may be easily drawn across the table when it is desired, and when about to remove the same it is only neccssary to release the end from the bracket at the opposite side of the table, and the spring in the roller will cause the same to roll the cover. After this it is only necessary to push the brackets under the overhanging edge of the table, and the same is ready for use. In the modification shown in Figs.5 and6 adifferent manner of adjusting the brackets isindicatcd.
I I are guides consisting of castings or plates secured to the under side of the table, and having small headed studs formed thereon, adapted to be received in the slots 0 in the horizontal portionsf of the arms F. The inner ends of the said horizontal portions are upturned, as at K, to form vertical projections, having the slots is therein to communicate with the inner ends of the slots 6. Thus, when it is desired to raise the bracket for use, draw the same out and cause the stud on the inner guide, 1, to engage or pass up into the slot 7c,
and the outer end of the bracket will be raised. Thus we provide a bracket or support forbilliard-table covers, having the cover secured or attached thereto, and so constructed and arranged that when not needed to cover the table it may be lowered and pushed in under the overhanging cornice of the said table, out of the way of the players and almost out of sight, and when needed it is only necessary to draw the bracket out, elevate the same, and draw the end of the cover across the table and attach it to the opposite bracket.
By providing the easily -operated means herein described a table may be covered in a very short time, and the appearance when covered will be very neat; also, the cover may be kept in proper shape when not in use, and always in proper position to be easily drawn across the table.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. The combination, with a billiard-table,of
the vertically -'adjustab1e brackets attach ed thereto and adapted to stretch the cover over the table, substantially as described. 2. The table having the guides below its upper side, in combination with the verticallyadjustable brackets secured in the said guides and adapted to support the cover over the table when the brackets are raised, substantially as described.
3. In a playing-table, the guide-blocks secured to the under side of the top thereof, and
the slots or groves O and D in the said blocks,
combined with the brackets having the arms F, comprising thehorizontal portions f, to engage in the said slots, the upwardly bent or inclined portionsf, and the cross-bar G at the upper ends of the said arms, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
adapted to be rolled thereon, substantially 4 as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
