T0 cllvwkom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. OARLSON,: a citizeniof-the UnitedStates, residing at: Chicago, in: the countyv ofacookwand State; of Illinois,"have invented a new and useful: w Improvement in Pen: or 1 Pencil 1 Clips: 7 of which/the followin is a s ecification.
oughly adapted to the. purpose.
T he present invention constitutes an;
provement on the pencil'clip describedinmy.-
application 1 No. .l39,2-50,R.filied December 28, 1916. v
The 1 invention is illustratedsin sits pres. ferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a pen equipped with the improved clip, showing the clip in front elevation; Fig. 2, a view of the same in side elevation; Fig. 3, a broken sectional view illustrating the manner in which the device is adapted to grip the fabric of the pocket; and Fig. 4:, a side elevational view of the clip, detached from the pen.
In the drawing, A represents a fountain pen. It will be understood, however, that the invention is equally useful in connection with a lead pencil.
B represents the improved clip. It comprises, in integral formation, a socket 1, and. a lever 2 of the first class, having a resilient or spring support 3 which is formed integrally with the socket 1 and the intermediate portion of the lever 2.
The socket 1 comprises a resilient splitring adapted to tightly embrace the pen or pencil, said ring having its intermediate portion recessed or cut away, as indicated at 1, thus providing a lower ring portion 1", an upper ring portion 1, and vertical connecting strips 1 The socket is resilient and adapted to grip the pen or pencil with suiiicient firmness, but preferably permitting the pencil to be withdrawn from the socket while the clip remains secured to the pocket.
The lever 2 comprises a relatively long gripping-arm 2 and a short manipulating arm or finger-piece 2* adapted to effect release of the clip from the fabric of the pocket. The arm 2* depends somewhat below the lower end of the socket 1, and has Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Get. 23, 191%.
an out-curved lower extremity 2, which fa cilitates the entrancev of the :fabric I of the pocket between'the lever and thessocket,-=as
is provided. a short distance; above its'lower will be understood fromFig 3,- The armil end with a recess-or, opening 'Q 'WhlCh is 1 of v:su-tiicient.size to permit :the entry}of;the;= adjacentconvex portion of the lower ring..- section 1 ofr-the socket, as-fshown somewhat-i .exaggeratedlyi in Fig. 4. I
This arrangement. facilitates: the formationofthe .clipinsuch manner as to give the lover a proper 3"set Wlilll relation. ;to'.ithe socket,- thus. providing :for effective tension '1 of the/spring when theleveriis in thehold ,1
ing position show n gin Fig 3. Alsog-l by;
means of this provision, the lower ring-section l iof the-socket serves asa prominence:
whiclnis adapted to-force the fabric of the pocket somewhat into the opening 2 of the gripping-arm of the lever, so that the clip will take a secure hold upon the fabric. This secure gripping action is obtained without danger of injury to the fabric; and,
moreover, the construction is economical, since the gripping-arm of the lever-need not be made much longer than the socket itself.
The resilient support 3 preferably comprises two narrow resilient strips flanking the finger-piece 2 7 As stated, the clip is of integral formation throughout. It may be formed conveniently by stamping a blank from thin sheet-metal, slitting the metal to provide the portion which forms the finger-piece 2 curving the side strips flanking the fingerpiece downwardly in such manner as to afford the curved strips constituting the resilient support 3, and curving the metal'which forms the socket away from the lever 2 and into the circular form, as will be understood.
In the use of the device, inward pressure upon the finger piece 2 serves to move the grip-portion of the lever away from the pen, thus enabling the pen to be inserted into the pocket, while the gripping-lever passes outside of the fabric of the pocket. l/Vhen it is desired to remove the pen from the pocket, the'clip may be removed with the pen by pressing inwardly on the finger-piece and thus lifting the gripping end of the lever from engagement with the fabric; or, if desired, the clip may be allowed to remain in the pocket, and the pen may be withdrawn from the socket, at will The construction described is simple, cheap and thoroughly eiiicacious for its purpose. In curving the strips 3 and giving to the lever 2 the desired set, the lever may be caused to assume the relation to the socket which is illustrated in Fig. i. The device may be tempered after formation, so that the springs will not lose their resilience.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom.
What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A pen or pencil clip, comprising in integral formation, a socket, a lever having an actuating finger-piece at its upper end and having, also, an outcurved lower extremity, and a resilient support formed integrally with an intermediate portion of said lever and with the upper portion of said socket, the lower portion of said socket and the corresponding portion of said lever having a co-acting elevation and recess whereby theyare adapted to bend and grip between them the fabric of a pocket.
2. A pen or pencil-clip comprising, in integral formation, a socket, a lever having one end provided with a recess and adapted to serve as a grip and the other end adapted to serve as a finger-piece for efiectiug release, and a resilient support formed integrally with an intermediate portion of the lever and with the upper portion of said socket, said socket having its lower portion provided with a prominence co-acting with the recess of the gripping portion of said lever.
3. A pen or pencil-clip comprising, in integral formation, a socket composed of a lower split ring-section, an upper split ringsection and vertical strips connecting the eX- tremities of the split ring-sections, a lever having its upper end formed to afford a finger-p1ece and having its lower portion pro-- vided with a recess adapted to be engaged by the lower split ring-section of said socket, and a curved resilient support for the lever formed integrally with an intermediate portion of the lever and with the upper split ring-section of said socket.
