The invention refers particularly to locks of what I call the one-bolt type, viz., those where a single dead bolt is employed which is .protractable from either side of the door, provision being made for. blocking the operation of certain keys at the outside of the door when the bolt. has been shot from the inside, although permitting the withdrawal of the bolt from the outside at all times by a special key. My improvements are also applicable to a lock in which a latch bolt is retractable by all of the, keys when the dead bolt is in the, retracted position,'said latch bolt, however, being retracted only by the emergency key when the dead bolt is in the protracted position. One of the primary objects of theinvention is to provide a lock in which a cylinder having a rollback or, cam arm radially movable on thekey plug'is adapted to operate two different members by-means of said rollback or cam arm'when said cylinder is actuated by one key, whereas said rollback or cam'arm is operative on only one ofsaid members when another key is used. 'By this arrangement, one roll back or cam arm. is adapted to do the work which in many cases has been done by two roll backs or cam arms, and the construction and operation of the lock are thereforesimplified. The latch bolt may be retracted when the dead bolt is in the retracted position by turning the roll back 29 into contact with the free end of lever 30, which thereby actuate's the main latch retracting lever 33, as shown in F 2. In operating the lever 30, the roll back 29 abuts a projection on the end portion of lever 30, which projection is in the plane of the talons 23 and of the roll back.
The cylinder lock 26 in the example shown has the usual case 38 and 'face plate or escutcheon 39. A key plug 40 is rotatable in the case 88 and is controlled by the usual pin tumblers -41. The roll back 29 previously mentioned is carried by the rear end portion of the key plug 4.0, but is radially movable thereon. The rear end portion of the key plug is reduced so as to present an extension 42 of generally rectangular cross-section, as shown in Fig. 7 ()ver this reduced extension 42 and against a shoulder 43 on the main part of the key plug is fitted a member 44: in the shape of a disk which i's'provided with small perforations 45 registeringwith screw'openings in the key plug. The roll back 29 is of more or less usual configuration, but instead of being fixed against movement on the key plug, it is mounted to slide on the extension For this purpose, the front or forward face or theroll back 29 is provided with a guide groove %6 engaging the extension 42,
and at the sides of the groove 46 are verti cally directed slots l? which provide clearanc'e for small screws :8,by means of which the roll back'is secured to the key plug. .lflach of these screws as passes through one of the slots d7, thence through one of the openings 45 in the member dd, and then. engages the threads of tapped opening or socket in the key plug itself. By providing the slots d7, the roll back 29 is permitted to move radially relatively to the keyplug on the extension 2 from theposition shown in Fig. l to that shown in Fig. 3. This roll back, however, is normally held in the posi tion shown in Fig. l relatively torthe key plug by means of a small spring 49, which is connected at one end to a projection 50011 the member Al i, and the other end to a pin 51, on the outer part 'of' the roll back arm. This spring 49 isaccomniodated' in a suitablesocket 52 on the forward or front face of the rollback, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8. The re normally holds the roll back in the position shown. in Fig. (3, with the upper ends of the slots 4 in abutment with the shanks of the screws 4L8. The roll back is provided with a notch 53 at its lower part, which notch. enters the same from the bottom, and is located in the back wall of the guide groove The notch does not extend as high as the top of the keyway 5e, and its upper-edge 55 presents an abutment adapted to be engaged by the emergency key Nhen tie emergency key is inserted, its beveled rear end engages the top edge of the notch 53, and'the roll back 2a is thereby raised to the position io'wn'in Fig. 5, its outer end being'moved radially outward relatively to the key plug so that said outer end will describe a larger circle whenthis key is rotated than it does in the case when the change key 27 is rotated. ilhechange key 27 is shorter than the emergency key, and does not engage the notch 58; consequently, the roll'backis not displaced radially by the change key, and the outer end thereof turns in a smaller circle than it does .wnen said rollback is actuated by the emergency key. When the emergency key 28 is withdrawn, the spring 429 restores the roll back to its normal position, but in some cases the spring can be omitted, because the roll back will return to its normal positionby gravity.
VVhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. l, the latch bolt can be retracted by either oi? the keys 2?, by inserting such k y and turning in a dire tion. lVhile the emergency key turns the roll b'a ck in a larger circle than does the change key, in any event the cam will be turned into engagement 'ith the latch res tracting lever for the purpose of operating the same and retracting the latch by means the lever as reviously explained, ()n the other hand, the dead bolt 15 can only be protracted and retracted by means of the emergency key. "When'the change key is inserted and turned in a clockwise direction with respect to l 2, the roll back 29 will not reach down far enough to actuate the tumble-r i6,- and consequently said roll back will take up against the talon '23 nearest to the race plate of the lock, and this talon will block further movement thereof, as indicated by thedotted lines in F 2. The emergency key, however, will readily protract and retract the dead bolt because it moves "the roll bolt $29 radially outward to a position in which it will properly engage the ta is. as shown Fig. 3. T he emergency ey will. protract the dead bolt, and then retract it, and then on continued movement of said roll back after the dead bolt has been retracted, it will abut against and operate the lever 3005f the latch mechanism and thereby retractthe latch. The change key cannot operate the latch bolt are the dead bolt has been protracted, for it is first necessary to retract the dead bolt to bring the lever into an operative position, and this can only be done by the emergency key.
Qt will be understood that by my invention, two members of a mortise lock mechanism, for example, the members 15 and 80 may both be actuated by a single roll back, such as 29, when said roll back is displaced radially relatively to the key plug by one key; whereas only one of the members, for example, the member 30, may be actuated b said roll back when it occupies its normal position relatively to the key plug.
I do not claim herein the construction of the cylinder lock per se as the same is claimed in my application, Serial No. 191,781, filed Sept. 17, 1917.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction shown, I claim:
1. The combination with mortise lock mechanism having two movable members, of a cylinder lock having a key plug, a roll back movably mounted on said key plug,
a key to displace said roll back on said key plug andoperate either of said members, and a second key inoperative to displace said roll back relatively to said key plug, and operable through said roll back on only one or said members; substantially as described.
2. The combination with mortise lock mechanism having two movable members located in the same plane, ofa cylinder lock having a key plug, a roll back on said key plug, a key to turn said roll back in an arc of a large circle into operating engagement with either of said members, and a second key to turn said, rollback in the arc of a small circle into operating engagement with one of said members but inoperative on the other member; substantially as described' .3. The combination with mortise lock mechanism having two movable members located in the same plane, of a cylinder lock having a key plug, said key; plug having an extension at the rear endthereof, a roll back slidably mounted on said extension tomove radially relatively to the key plug, a key to displace said roll back radially and move it into operating engagement with either of said members, and a second key to turn said roll back into operating engagement withone of said members while said rollback is maintained in the initial relation to said key plug and inoperativeon the other key plug and roll back so that, the latter will operatively engage one of said members but will not operatively engage the other, said roll back rotatable about the same axis by the respective keys but in different arcs; substantially as described.
7. The combination with a mortise lock mechanism having two movable -members,
