PHILIP A. BECKER, 0E BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SUPPLEMENTAL BOX-LID.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHLLIP A. BEcxER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, boroughof Brooklyn,
county of Kings, and State of New York,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Supplemental. Box-Lids, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex act specification. 1 This invention relates to a class .of' devices adapted to be used in conjunction with boxes.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a supplemental lid whereby a substantially rectangular plate of glass having three of its edges free of a frame, or rim may be applied on the open top of the body of a box for permitting merchandise in the box to be displayed without exposure to the air as well as preventing the collect ing of dust and .the'like, and which is of a form so that the lid may be swung to open and closed positions to allow the merchandise to be conveniently dispensed from the box as occasion requires. The invention consists essentially of a transparent plate which is preferably substantially rectangular in shape for being movably disposed on the open top of the body of a box, and parts of the transverse edges of the plate adjacent to one of its longitudinal edges are formed to provide retaining portions so that a rim of metal, or the like may be anchored on this longitudinal edge to obviate the requirement for inclosing all the edges of the plate in a frame which tends to obscure portions of the contents of the box from view as is incident to many forms of display lids of this class in ordinary use. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide means on the rim whereby the plate may be detachably applied to the lid of the box so as to be swung to open and closed positions on the body of the box when the lid is moved accordingly; and a further object of the invention is to provide a supplemental lid of a simple and eflicient construction.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invent-ion being more fully described here- Specification of Letters Patent. p t t d 1 23', 1917, Application filed October 11, 1915. Serial No.'55,222.
inafter, and then pointed out in the claims I at theend of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, showing one form of supplemental box lid embodying my invention. i
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top View of the transparent plate with the form of rim applied thereonas shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line VV of Fig.4, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a slightlymodified form of the box lid.
The supplemental box lid has a transparent plate 10 which is preferably of glass as well as being preferably substantially rectangular in shape, and this plate may-be of any size so as to be movably disposed on the open top of the body, asll, of-a box having a lid, as 12, hinged thereto, or when the supplemental lid is used in conjunction with cigar boxes the plate 10 may be of a size to movably fit between the usual ex tending upper edges of the side walls thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. I 1
As it is well known that'glass is the most advantageous material for the transparent plates employed in this class of supplemental. box lids, and owing to the difliculty of causing metal to be fixed thereto against "accidental displacement, I provide on the On the longitudinal edge of the'transparent plate which is provided with the retaining portions 18 and 14: is a metal=rim 18.
The metal rim 18, may be in the'formof a strip 19 somewhat longerthan this edgeof -the'*plate, and the ends of this strip are turned over the inclined edges of the angular notches 15 so as to overlap the underside of the plate. Thus by providing the retaining portions 13 and 141 metallic rims may be anchored to the transparent plate against accidental displacement.
Serving as means to permit the transparent plate with its metallic rim to'be detachably applied to the lid of the box so as to be swung to open and closed positions on the open top of the body of the box when the lid 12 of the box is moved accordingly,
" ably connecting the transparent. plate with on the rim may. be provided; an upwardly projecting'paiiel, or strip26 which is adapted to be disposed across the lower partot the box lid, and this panel is slightly longer than the lid of the box. On theendsof the.
panel 26 may be provided any suitable t me Qt. eve Qr mp for n t nc t e types otsleeve's,"as shown at 27 and 27 in Fig. 1, or forms of bent; wire. sleeves, as.
shown at 28 Fig. 4:, may be used. The sleeyes. are. of sizes as well. as being. sufii ciently spaced apart so. as to be. removably fittedover the side edgesof the box lid; and instead or these forms of. sleeves any other desired means may be employed for detach- .movedthe trans arent late. will be 'uided P L g to a.closed position on the body o'fvthe box so that thecontents ofthe box may befdisplayed-without.exposure to the air as well as preventing the collection of. dnstand the like thereon.
In the foregoing description, lghaveembodiedthe preferred form of my invention, but I 'do, not Wish; to. be understood as liiniting myselfthereto, asv l amawarefthat motli fications may. be made th rein without departing from the. principle, or sacrificing any. otitheadvantages of. this invention, therefore Lreserve fto. myseli the rightto make such, changes asfairly fall; withinlthe scope thereof;
' Having thus. described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ent;+
1. In a supplemental lid of thecharacter described, a substantially re tangularfglass 2. 2%. tthi paint my o tained? plate having two or? its opposite corners notchedto provide two retaining portions whereby a rim may be anchored on one of the edges of the plate to permit the plate to be connected to a box or the like so as to be swung to open and closed positions thereon aswell as, permitting three of the edges of the plate to be free of a rim.
2. In. a supplemental box lid, a substantially rectangular glass plate adapted to be movably disposetb on the open top of the body (if the lJOX tllG said. platehaving two of its opposite. corners notched to provide two retaining. portions, and a metalliorim anchorecb on. the. retaining. portions of the plate to permit the plate to be connected; to theboxsoas tobeswungxto open and&closed positions thereon as well: as. permitting three of the edges of the platetoxbed ree of a. rim. i
3. Inasupplementalibox lid; a.r-ectangular glass plate adapted to be disposedzon the opentop, ofrthe, body ofia box, the said plate l1a ving-.-two.of its oppositecorners notched to. provide. two. retaining portions, a. me tallic. rim. on the. retaining. portions, and means on the. rim whereby. the. plateanay. be detachably connected? to the box lid so.;that the. plate. ma be. swung to open and sclosed positions-on.thebody of the lOZOX. when the box. lid-is moved accordingly.
4;. In a. supplemental box. lid, a. plate adapted to. be disposedon theopen top of the body ofithe box, the. said :plate havingaa notched; portion at; each. of; two adjacent corners to provide two. oppositelyarranged retainin portions, a .rim. adapted to fit over the edge of-fsaid plate. adjacentthe notched portions thereof; together. w :ithmeans connected to said rim. adaptedto positively engage; the said; notched retaining portions, a nd means on. the said rim whereby the plate may be detachably and 'hingedly. connected to, the box lid:
