Applicationiled May 16, 1917. Serial No. 168,941.
'To @IMMO/m #may concern:
4"B'eit known that I, 'SIDNEY-LOVELL, a citizenf'ofthefUnited -States, residing'at Chi- Icago, vin 1the 'county of Cook :and State of '-Illinois, have invented a certain 'new and useful `Improvement in Mausoleum Gonl-structions, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, ref-- erencebeing had to the-accompanying drawings, forming a partofthis specification.
My `invention relates to mausoleum cons'tructions, and especially fto a system for is a vertical section of a mausoleum "conl struction and Ventilating system therefor embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a portion of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detail of construction.
In the arrangement shown for carrying out the invention a mausoleum structure 1 is shown, the same having a floor 2 and an entry door 3. A. series of vaults or crypts 4. are shown arranged one above the other, although of course the same may be arranged in various ways. In the uppermost vault 4 is shown a coffin 5.
The invention relates more especially to the arrangement by which these vaults or crypts can be ventilated, preferably by a continuous current of air circulating through the same. To such end I show the rear ends of the vaults provided with apertures in which are placed or fitted tubular members 6 and 7. These members 6 and 7 are substantially alike except that they are in upside-down or reversed positions with reference to one another. Each member as best shown in Fig. 4, comprises a tubular or boxlike structure or casing conveniently of rectangular cross section, although of course this may be varied. In the member 7 shown in Fig.r 4 the top 7a is provided with a re- -cesser cutaway `'portion 8 andthe bottom 7B with a'p'rojecting-member oir tongue'r9.v In the case of the member 6 the reverseisltrue, the top being provided j-with the tongue 9 yand Vthe bottom with the recess 8. These members 6- and 7 are'usedin connection with andaregtted toapipe 10 which isextended vertically inthe rear wall-of the mausoleum in the rear fof the lvaults 4. A member 6 is preferably -used at the bottom of `each vault `in which case the tongue 9r projects into the pipe 10 and contacts with the rear wall of ythe vvsame, lthereby 1 closing said ypipe against vupward Lmovement or circulation fof air therein, and consequently defleeting said pipe laterally and in'tofa'nd through the vmember'f'into the interior of the "vault 4. Similarly a member -7 `islitt'ed in position so that its tongu`e9 also closes the pipe 10 'againstmovement 'or circula- Specification of Letters Patent. .Patngdct 23, v
tion of air or the like, except in anupward direction, in each case the recessed portion 8 fitting 'snugly 'to the 'pipe `l() and tmaking `anair tight joint therewith. To accommodate the members 6 and 7 the pipey 10 is preferably provided with laterally extending ears 11 which lit closely against the outer vertical side walls of said members 6 and 7 as best shown in Figs. 2 and 8. Bolts 12 may be extended through the side members 11 and also through `the ends of the members 6 and '.7 between-the same, so as to form a tight and firm connection between the members 6 and 7 and the pipe 10. Thus it will be seen that air or other fluid passing into one end of the pipe 10 will be circulated through the vaults 4 into and out of one vault, and thence into and through the pipe 10 to the next vault, and into and out of that, and so on through the series. A coperating pipe 14 is provided, preferably in the rear of the pipe 10, and these two pipes 10 and 14 are conveniently led to the basement 15 or other convenient place, where suitable apparatus is provided for inducing a circulation through the series of vaults. As a convenient arrangement I show an electric motor 16 driving a fan or blower 17 which latter is connected with the pipe 14 by means of an inlet pipe 18, the blower 17 being preferably such as to force air through the pipe 18 and into the pipe 14 and from the latter downwardly through the vaults 4 in a downward direction, entering each vault at the top and circulating through the same and leaving it at the bottom. An antiseptic tank 20 is also shown connected with the pipe 10 by a connecting pipe 21 having a valve 22. ln this way the air coming from the vaults passes through the antiseptic tank and is puried before being delivered into the outer air or back again into the blower 17, as the case may be. Y
lt will be understood that changes and modiications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
l/Vhat claim is:
l. rEhe combination with the vaults or crypts of a mausoleum, of a circulation pipe and tubular members extending between lsaid circulation pipe and the. interior of said vaults or crypts, said tubular members being provided with means for stopping the circulation of air in said pipe and directing it into and ont of said vaults or crypts.
2. The combination with the vaults or crypts of a mausoleum, of a circulation pipe and tubular members extending between said circulation pipe and said vaults or crypts, said tubular members being provided with projections extending crosswise of said circulation pipe to stop the current of air therein and deflect the same into the vaults or crypts.
edges of said apertures, of tubular members tted to said circulation pipe at said apertures, said tubular members having projections extending into and across said circulation pipe and fitting the interior wall of the same, said members also having cutaway portions adapted to it the shape of.
said pipe, said tubular members fitting and being secured between the side lugs on said pipe, whereby circulation in said pipe is stopped and deflected outwardly through said tubular members.
ln witness whereof, l hereunto subscribe my name this 26th day of May A. D., 1916.
