My invention has for its object to 1mprove upon the construction shown in my U. S. Patent No. 1,183,228, issued May 16th, 1916, the improvement residing in the provision of means for preventing each front leg of the front bench or knee from shiftmg rearwardly in respect to the runners 111 case it strikes any object.

With the foregoing object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the sled with part of the front bench leg broken away to disclose one form of the means employed for preventing rearward movement of the fastener by which said leg is secured to the runner;

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the application of a different form of stop means;

Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views showing other forms of the stop devices.

In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 has reference to the body of a sled of the type in which the runners 2 are flexed by operation of a steering bar 3 to guide the sled, the usual front bench or knee 4 being provided for supporting the body 1 from the runners 2. The rear legs 5 of the bench 4: are secured to the vertical webs of the runners 2 in any suitable manner as by rivets 6 passing through circular openings in these parts. In Figs. 1 and 2, a stop 10 extends between the fastener 7 and the rear end of the slot 9, said stop being formed by part of the vertical web of the runner as shown.

In Figs. 3 and 4: the stop 10 is in the form of a flat plate stamped from a single piece of metal for contact with one side of the runner, said plate having at one end an opening 11- through which the fastener 7 is adapted to extend, while its other end is formed with an integral tongue 12 bent laterally and then continued in a plane parallel with that of the plate, said tongue being adapted to extend through the rear end of the slot 9 and to abut said endas shown clearly in the drawing.

In Fig. 5, the stop 10 is identical with that illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 with the exception that it is provided with a pair of tongues l2 on its opposite ends and shaped in the same manner as the tongue 12, this form of the device having an opening .11 to receive the bolt or rivet 7 Fig. 6 depicts yet another type of the stop. In this view the plate 10 is provided at its rear end with a tongue. 12 to pass through the slot 9, while its front end is formed with a. notch 11 through which the fastener 7 is designed to extend.

Regardless of the type of stop employed, rearward movement of the front legs 8 of the bench 4: will be prevented in case said legs strike objects while the sled is in use and thus bending and distorting of said legs is reduced to. a minimum.

In the foregoing I have described the preferred forms of the stop and in the drawing such forms have been illustrated, but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made without sacrificing the principal objects.

I claim 1. The combination with a sled having laterally flexible runners formed with longitudinal slots at substantially their bending points, and fasteners passing through one end of said slots for securing said runners to the body of the sled; of means for preventing movement of said fasteners in said slots.

2. 3. A stop device of the class described comprising a metal plate having an opening V and having a tongue on one of its ends bent laterally and then bent into a plane substan- 'tially parallel With that of said plate.
