IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,394, dat-ed March 5, 1872.

Specification describing certain Improvements in Wash-Boilers, invented by JOSEPH C. TILTON, of the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania.

My invention relates to the arrangement of the passages leading from the under side of the false bottom to the top of the boiler; and consists in the shape of the passage, which is wide at the bottom and drawn in at the top, and in making the passage on the inside of the boiler. The object accomplished by this part ot' my invention is to give a free passage lfor the hot water and steam from the bottom to the top of the boiler; and my invention relates to the arrangement of the false bottom, which is provided with holes, through which the water passes, and to the combination with it of the movable bottom for opening and closing the holes in the false bottom. The object of this partof my invention is to allow the cold water free passage into the space below the false bottom. rlhis water, when heated, pushes up the movable bottom, closing the holes in the false bottom, forces the heated water to ind an exit through the end passages provided for that purpose. y

Ais the boiler made in the usual shape; B, false bottom, supported by the ribs C C, which extend almost its entire length and are secured to it; D D D, holes in the false bottom,through which the cool water passes into the chamber ll formed by the false bottom B; F F F, guards, supported by the rib G, which keep the clothes up oir' ot the false bottom and prevent them from stopping the holes D D D; Il, movable bottom, which slides up and down on the rib I, attached to the under side of the false bottom B. It is prevented from dropping oft' of the rib I by the cross-pieces J J J, also attached to the false bottom. K K K, holes in the movable bottom, placed between the holes in the false bottom, to facilitate the low of the cool water into the chamber E when the movable part H is dropped down, as shown in the drawing; L L, passages through which the heated water is forced to the top of the boiler; M M M, vent-holes through which the hot water -is discharged onto the clothes; N, lug, and N spring, which hold the false bottom in place.

The clothes to be washed, being soaped and laid smoothly in the boiler, are covered with water. While the water in the water-chamber E is cold the movable bottom H remains as shown in the drawing, but when the water begins to boil the movable bottom His forced up, closing the holes D D in the false bottom B. As the pressure increases the mixed hot water and steam are forced up through the passages L L and discharged with considerable force upon the clothes. When a portion of the water and steam has been discharged the pressure ofthe water in the boiler proper forces the movable bottom H down and the cooler water runs into the water-chamber E, to be in its turn heated and forced out through the passages L L. Vhen all the water becomes thoroughly heated a constant circulation is kept up, the hot water passing through the clothes dissolving the dirt and cleaning them perfectly.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,

l. The movable perforatedbottom H,in combination with the false bottom B, when arranged and operating as and for the purpose described.

2.` The perforated false bottom B having ribs C C G and I, guards F, and movable bottom H, together with the passages L L, in combination with wash-boiler A, when arranged and operating as and t'or the purpose specified.
