Description

G. F. wAuGH. MATCH Box. APPLICATION FILED MAY 29fi9l.
Lm, Patented oet. 23,1917.
GEORGE FRANK WA'UGH, OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
Specication of Letters Patent.
.MATCH-nox.
Application led May 29, 1917. Serial No. 171,655.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I GEORGE F. WAUGH, a citizen of the United tates of America, and
in the Army of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which tion. e
The object of this invention is to so construct the box that one end of the main or outer casing of the box may be conveniently employed as a chamber for lighting cigars or cigarettes, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box showing it closed; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing it partly open, the parts being positioned for utilizing one end of the outer casing as a cigar-lighting chamber. A
My box consists of the usual open-ended rectangular outer casing a and the .usual tray or drawer b fitted thereinto and adapted to slide outwardly in either direction. On the outer face of one end wall of the tray a suitable abrasive material c is applie and in one side wall of the tubular outer casing is form'ed a hole d, this hole being located a short distance from one end of the casing.
\ In using this box for lighting la cigar or cigarette 1n awind or draft, the parts are adjusted in the position shown in Fig. 2that 1s, the tray is drawn out of the main box far enough to uncover the hole d. 4',lhen the headed end of the match is inserted through the hole and lighted by scratching it against the abrasive material c. In this way the end of the main casing forms a protected chamber into which the end of the cigarette yor cigar may be inserted for lightin the following is a, full and clear specifica- It will be understood, of course, t at one or both the side walls of the main casing may also be provided with abrasive lighting material, ifdesired, but it will not be necessary to do this with my box, inasmuch as the abrasive surface c on theend wall of the tray may be used for striking a match in the ordinary manner, if desired. In other words, by utilizing the end wall of the tray as a support for the abrasive lighting material and by providing one of the walls of the main casing with a match-receiving hole,
my box is made capable of being used in the ordinary manner or in the manner above set forth for lighting a cigar or cigarette in the wind.
The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preferred embodiment having 'been specificallyv described, what is claimed as new is:
In a match box, a main casing open at itsv ends and having one of its edge walls provided with a small match-receiving hole near one end, and a slidable tray fitting in the main casing and having an abrasive material' applied to the outer face of that one of its end walls whiclis adjacent to said hole.`
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my` signature.
GEORGE WAUGI-I.
