To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, RICCARDO lsoeABnLLA and Francesco Loafer-inni, a subject of the King et' italy and a citizen of the United States, respectively, residing at New York, in the county of New -York and State of "New York, have invented new and useful improvements in ashing-Machines, of which the toller/tiring is a specificationa The invention relates to clothes washers, and it includes the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a washer of simple and durable structure having means for lifting the clothes as they are passed through the washing liquid and lmeans for heating the clothes, moving in a direction opposite to that in which the lifting means move while in operation.

As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the clothes washer includes a tank 1 which may he of any usual or desired shape. Said tank is provided with a draw valve 2.
Stub shafts 3 are journaled for rotation in the ends of the tank 1 and the said shafts are squared at their inner ends, as 4at-f.,
Gear wheels 5 are mounted upon theshafts 3 and mesh with gear wheels 6 mounted upon stub shafts 7 also located at the ends of the tank 1. A crank shaft 8 is applicable to one ot the stub shafts 7 and may be used for .A receptacle is located within the tank 1 .and is adapted to contain the clothes during the 4washing operation. The said receptacle includes heads 9 which are journaled upon the stub shafts 3 hereinbefore referred to. The said heads 9 are connected together by means of a oraminous material 10 which is in the form of wire mesh material or any other suitable open-work ma terial. The said foraminous material is 1n sections and one section, for instance, the' which the heads 9 and foraminous material 10 are components when the gear wheels 6 are rotated. rlhe said gear wheels 6 also mesh with the inner set of teeth of the annuli 11. A shaft 12 is journaled for rotation at the upper portion of the tank 1 and gear wheels 18 are mounted upon said shaft and mesh with the outer teeth of the annuli 11. Bars 14 are mounted in the receptacle of which the heads 9 arev components and are spaced at suitable intervals apart.
Arms 15 are mounted upon the squared ends 4 of the stub shaft 3 and rotate with the shafts. inasmuch as the gear wheels 6 are interposed between the gear wheels 5 and the annuli 11, the said arms 15 are rotated in a direction opposite to that of the receptacle of which the heads 9 are components when the said receptacle is rotated. A shaft 16 is carried by the arms 15 and a beater 17 is journaled on the said shaft.. The said beate may be stellar-form in transverse section or of any other conguration suitable for encountering the clothes and agitating or beating the same during the washing operation. A bar 18 is also carried by the arms 15 and serves as an additional beater to encounter the clothes. in advance of the action of the beater 17.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing the bar 18 is provided at one end with a sleeve 19 in which is located a spring 20, which normally holds the said sleeve distended with relation to the bar. When the sleeve 19 is inserted in the socket of the arm 15 the bar 18 is held in position. By retracting the sleeve 19, the spring 2O is compressed and said sleeve may be removed' from the 'socket of that arm which receives it and hence the bar 18 may be disconnected from the arms 15.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing,A it will be observed that the arms 15 are provided With recesses 21 in which are located coil springs 22, the said springs bearing at one end against the shaft 16 and holding the said shaft toward the outer ends of the said recesses. Therefore, it is apparent that when the beater 17, which is journaled upon the shaft 16, encounters the clothes the said beater may move in an inward direction in the event that the clothes are in a Wad and should tend to choke or interfere With -the operation of the machine.
As illustrated in Fig. 5 the beater 17 is provided at the intervals between its points with ries 23 Whiclif may perform their function in Washing or cleaning the clothes While the device is in operation.
As shown in Fig. 6 the bar 14 may be provided With bristles 24 which also encounter the clothes and operate upon the same with a `cleaning eifect during the manipulation of the device.
From the foregoing description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing9 it will be seen that a clothes Washing device of simple and durable structure is provided and that the parts mutually co 'Lasagne operate with each other to elfectuallyl and eficiently cleanthe clothes at an expense yof small manual labor.
In using the structure very desirable and beneficial results are obtainable by permitting the Water in the boiler to come to a boiling point and then by simply revolving the clothes container occasionally or from time to time in the presence of the hot Water and steam, the water is made to pass through the clothes in somewhat film-like masses and the action resulting brings about. both a thorough and rapid cleansing of the clothes.
Having thus described our invention, We claim:`
A clothes Washer comprising a tank, a foraminous receptacle journaled for rotation in the tank, means for rotatingr the receptacle in one direction, a beater located Within the receptacle, a detachable bar connected with the beater.Y and means for rotating the beater and the bar in a direction opposite to that in which the said receptacle rotates.
