Be it known that I, RICH RD 'Roosr, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of the city of vNfilwaukee, inthe. county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin,;'haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Stocking-Ironers; and Ido illustrated in the drawings andhereinafter hereby declare that the following is a :full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a clamp adapted tohold a sock or stockingstretched upon an ironing or drying device such as disclosed in the co-pending application for patent of Joseph Huebsch for theat-ed-hosieryforms,
filedJune 8th, 1914i, Serial No. 845,659. In ,the aforesaid invention the sock is drawn upon a suitable heated form, and is thus stretched to proper shape and then dr ed.
It is necessary during such ,an operation to hold the sock at its open end by suitable clamping means of some sort to prevent the same creeping and shrinking as it isdried. Accordingly I have constructed a clamp which forms the subject matter of the pres- .ent invention which is exceedingly eiiicient .and peculiarly adapted for the purpose.for

It is an object therefore of this mventlon to. construct a clamp, the parts of which are held associated with one another by resilient means, upon a suitable pintle member, so
, that opening of theclamp is resisted, and withv alining means formed ,on the respective clamping members to hold the .same in proper relation during all positions of adjustment.
Itis furthermore an'jimportant objectv of this invention to-construct a device consisting .of similarly -formed clamping members .recessed at one end to receiveapintle member therebetweemand with a resilient curved element, engaging said clamping members to force the same toward one another normally in closed, position and maintained upon said pintle member for pivotal movement-thereabout.

It is finally an object of this invention to construct a device simple in-construction and operation, and operating efliciently to perform the purpose.

As clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the inner peripheral surface of the curved portions 11, of the respective clamping members are grooved to afford ribs 1 1, thus affording a plurality of lines of contact for the clamping members when the device is used to hold a sock or stocking in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
One of the clamping members is longitudinallyslotted at its lower endto atford yoke or fork members. 15, as shown in Fig. a, and the other clamping member, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5, terminates in a single tongue 16, adapted to engage between the yoke members 15, when the clamp is in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. At the upper ends of the device the respective straight portions 8, of the clamping members each have an oblong slot therethrough, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and denoted by the reference numeral 17.
Integral with each of the clamping members and disposed at the lower end of the slot 17, of each thereof, and conforming to the curvature of the portion 11, are tongue members 18 and 19, respectively, the one on one side and the other on the other side of the device, so that-when the same is in the closed position shown in Fig. 2, said tongue members 18 and 19, respectively, lie against one another and project through said oblong slots. Said respective tongue members 18 and 19, thus serve as an alining means coacting with the tongue member 16, and fork members 15, at the lower end of the clamping members to positively maintain the clamping members in proper relation with one another at all times. The upper end of the straight portions 8, of each of the clamping members, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, are tapered off to thus permit the same to open, pivoting about the pintle 9, an extent equal to the angle between said tapered ends, the same being limited in their opening movement by the abutting of said tapered ends one against the other when the device is opened.
The operation is as follows:
The extent of opening of the clamping members is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, from which it will be apparent that the lower ends of the tongue member 16, and yoke members 15, of the respective clamping members do not separate sufficiently to permit insertion or withdrawal of an article therebetween. Consequently there is no possibility of the clamping device being accidentally detached entirely from the form 3,
with which it is used, but however, if it is are curved por desired to remove the device therefrom the clamp is loosened by gripping the knobs 13, and springing the clamping members apart as far as possible and then slipping the device off over the end of the form. When used, the sock 6, is drawn over the form 3, and the clamping member is then clamped around the end of the sock.
Attention is called to the fact that the parts are held rigidly and securely in operative relation with one another without the useof rivets, bolts or other retaining means beyond the screws 12 which hold the knobs attached to the clamping members, but this is a feature of construction which isimmaterial, as the knobs may be attached in any other suitable manner or cast integral with said members if so desired. 'However, due to the attachment by means of screws, wooden knobs may be used which act as insulating means, preventing the excessive heat from the form being communicated to the handles of the device with the possibility of burning the hands of an operator. The clamping members are maintained in proper relation with one another at all times, due
to the interengagement of the respective tongues 18 and 19, through the slots 17, as well as the engagement of the tongue 16, and fork members 15. The upper ends of the clamping members are held tightly upon the pintle 9, by means of the strong spring member 10, which, as pointed out, also resists opening movement of the members.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A clamp of the class described comprising. clamping members each having central portions curving away from one another,
one of said members having a relatively straight tongue formed on the lower end thereof, the other of said members having a relatively straight fork formed on the lower end thereof with which said tongue engages,.straight slotted portions formed on the upper ends of each of said clamping members adapted to lie flat against one another and each having a surface recess therein, a pintle engaged in said recesses, resilient means engaging said upper straight portions to maintain said clampingmembers normally closed against one another, and guiding means on each of said portions engaging in the slot of the other portion.
2. In a device of the class described, clamping members each having a straight portion with a recess at one end thereof, a pintle inserted between said members engaging in the recesses thereof, resilient means engaging in notches on the exterior of said members holding the same closely upon said pintle and resisting opening movement thereof, curved portions integral with said straight portions having tongue and fork members formed at the ends thereof to maintain the clamping members in alinement during all adjustments thereof, and means rigidly secured on said clamping members for holding the same apart against the action of said resilient means.
3. A device of the class described comprising clamping members, each having outwardly curved central portions arching away from one another respectively, one of said members having a tongue formed on the lower end thereof, the other member having a fork formed on the lower end thereof with which said tongue slidably engages, straight slotted portions formed on the upper ends of each of said clamping members, a pivotal connection provided at the upper ends of said straight portions of said clamping members, and integral projecting means on each of said clamping members engaging in the respective slotted portions of each of said clamping members to limit the opening movement of said clamping members.
l. In a device of the class described curved clamping members having recesses in the inner surfaces near the upper ends thereof, a pintle engaged in said recesses,means on said clamping members for actuating the same, a curved spring member engaging in recesses cut in the outer surface of each of said clamping members to force the same inwardly toward one another and maintain the same engaged upon said pintle, interfitting tongue and fork members on said respective clamping members to maintain the same in alinement with one another, and
means formed near the upper ends of said clan'iping members below said pintle to limit the opening movement of said clamping members to insure engagement of said tongue and fork members with one another in all positions of adjustment of said clamping members.
5. A clamp of the class described comprising curved clamping members, each having a straight slotted portion at the upper end thereof, integral projecting means formed on the upper portions of each of said clamping members engaging in the respective slotted portions of one another, tongue and fork members formed on the lower ends of said clamping members interfitting one another to retain the clamping members in alinement in all positions of adjustment, and insulating means on said clamping members to permit opening of the same.
In a device of the class described clamping members having curved central portions arching away from one another, interfitting tongue and groove members at the lower vends of said clamping members, fiat slotted portions at the upper end of each of said clamping members, integral means on each clamping member lying adjacent one another and projecting into the slot of the opposite clamping member, and a resilient member engaging around the ends of said clamping members to hold the same pivotally associated with one another.
