IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-POPPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,305, dated March 5, 1872.

To all to whom these presents may come:

Be it known that I, MosEs H. WILEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved (Jorn-Popper; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following speciiication and represented in the accompanying drawing', of which- Figure l is a side elevation of my said implement in a closed state, such gure also showing, in dotted lines, the same as open. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the hinged cover or inner end of the cylinder.

My invention relates to that class of devices used in popping corn and consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of its several operating parts, as hereinafter described, whereby a simple, cheap, durable, and effective apparatus is produced.

In carrying out my said invention, I make the body A of the device of wire-gauze and of a cylindrical form, and of any desired capacity, the two sides of the said sheet of wire being lapped upon each other and riveted. B B are two a-nnular metallic bands, which are respectively disposed around the two ends of the gauze cylinder, and are connected by two narrow metallic bars or plates, C G', disposed on opposite sides of t-he cylinder, the said bands and bars enveloping and constituting a frame to support the said cylinder. D is'the outer head or end of the cylinder, such being of a circular form and also made of wirenetting, and secured in place by means of a iiange (which is formed on and projects inward from the annular band B) and by the adjacent ends of the wire body; or the said head may be a metallic disk, either solid or perforated. I is a solid metal disk, which constitutes the upper or inner end of the cylinder, the same being` connected at one, end to the frame of the cylinder by a hinge, a a, so as to be capable of being either opened or closed, as occasion may require. To edect the closing of the said disk I, any suitable latch may be employed, as shown in the drawing. This disk has a turn-latch, b, pivoted thereto, and which operates with a catch, o, formed on the end of the plate C', as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. d is an arm or projection formed on the shank of the catch, for the purpose of enabling the latch to be readily released or secured, as may be desired, the same being operated by means as hereinafter stated. E is a cylindrical shaft, which is iirmly secured to the axis of the said disk, and is for the purpose of enabling rotative or semi-rotative movements to be imparted to the cylinder, which is effected by grasping the eye or end of the shaft between the thumb and fore finger and turning the same. F is a handle, whose arms extend down and embrace the shaft E in such manner as to support and freely slide on the shaft.

By my peculiar construction and application of the handle, as shown and described, such not only serves as bearings to support the shaft while being rotated, but enables a person to either open or close the latch whenever desirable wit-hout applying his hand to the latch, all that is requisite being to slide the handle upon the shaft until it impinges against the disk, when, by slightly moving the-handle either forward or backward, as circumstances may require, the adjacent arm'ot'A the handle, by striking against the knob or projection of the latch on one side, will release the latch, when the cylinder or receptacle readily turns upon its hinge, and assumes the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. To close the receptacle, the cylinder is placed upon its outer end, the actuating-shaft standing in a vertical position, the handle is slipped against the disk, as before, and moved in the opposite direction, when thelatch will be closed.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- My improved corn-popper, as described, the same consisting of the cylinderA and its frame, the disk I hinged to the latter, the, head D, shaft E, handle F, and latching device, combined and arranged together in the manner as hereinbefore specified.
