Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (lot. 9, 191?.
Application filed July 19, 1916, Serial No. 110,009. Renewed August 27, 1917. Serial No. 188,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at -Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and Stateof Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Yokes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of 'this specification.
sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken on the broken line 2--2 A thereof. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation of the improved'yoke; Fig. 4 is-a transverse,
vertical section taken on the line 4& of Fig.
11). And Fig. 5 is a perspective of the locking lock.
In said drawing, the improved yoke is des ignated generally by the reference A and 10 denotes the draw bar, the latter having the usual upper and lower shoulders 11 and 12. The yoke A, as shown, comprises an upper arm 13, lower arm 14:, rear connecting piece 15, and a hooded forward end, the latter comprising side walls 1616, top wall 17,
i and downwardly oifset bottom wall 18, the
latter merging into the lower arm 14:, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. The top wall- 17 is provided on its inner side with a transverse shoulder or gib 19 which engages the upper shoulder 11 of the draw bar. The side I walls 16-16 are provided with angular raped slots 20 through which may be inserted transversely, a locking block B. The locking block B is of substantially angular cross-section and has an upstanding flange 21 which'cotiperates 'with the lower shoulder 12 of the draw bar, and a horizontal flange 22. The side walls of the hood are prefer ably provided with reinforcements or shoulders 23 on their inner faces to form a better backing for the locking block whenthe lat date the head 26 of the bolt so that the latter,
after it has been inserted through the rectangular opening 24, may be slipped forwardly to the position most clearlyindicated in Fig. 1. The inner face of the bottom wall 18 is counter-sunk as indicated, at 28 to receive'the head of the bolt when in the position shown in Fig. 1. And small shoulders 29 are provided, which prevent the head of the bolt from slipping rearwardly after it has been seated in the counter-sink 28. The bolt is held in position by the nut 30 and cotter 31.
As will be apparent from an inspection of Figs. 1 and at, the counter-sink 28 is relatively shallow so that a portion of the bolt head will extend up abovethe top surface of the lower wall 18 and hence be located partly within the slot 27 formed in the under-face of the block B. By this means, the block B is prevented from lateral movement as will be apparent.
In the preceding description, it will be seen that the expedient which I have provided for retaining the block B in position, is simple and inexpensive and the bolt may be insertedandremoved with ease. In addition to the foregoing, it unnecessary to e; tend the block B beyor.=.: the side walls of the hood, thus providing for those conditions in railway service where the space between the front stops is comparatively narrow. Furthermore, by making the openings 20 in the-side walls somewhat larger than the sec tion of the block B, it is apparent that, by first removing thebolt, the block B may be shifted laterally sufiiciently to clear one side of the hood, and then twisted and withdrawn from the forward end of the hood. After this has been done, it is apparent that the draw bar may be dropped down and removed from the yoke without disturbing the latteror the gear therewithin.
me zeee I claim:
it A yoke for draf riggings having at hooded forward end Within which is adapted to he received a shouldered drew her butt, a removable shouldered locking block associated with said hood and adapted to engegea shoulder of the draw butt, the bottom Wall of the hood having an opening therein, and a short bolt having its head insertihle through said opening and to engage said locking block to prevent the latter from being displaced.
2. A yoke for draft formed its forward end to receive a draw bar outt therewithin, a rel'novehle looking block adapted to engage a shoulder on the drew her, one Wall of said end of the yoke having a slot therein, one portion of the slot being enlarged to permitthe insertion of bolt head t-herethrougl1,.the locking block heiiig provided with a slot arranged to aline -with said bolt slot, and a bolt insertlble through the slot therefor and having portion of its head located Within the slot in the block, when the bolt is in operative position.
3. A yoke for draft riggings having a hooded forward end Within which is adapted to be received a drew her butt, the hottom Wall of said hooded end being provided with a "f-shapedslot, e shouldered locking block insertihle laterally through slots in the side "Walls of the hooded d, and means insertible through said T-Sl' slot in. the hooded end and adapted, when in position, to engage the under-face lockingblock and prevent shifting thereof. l. yoke for draft riggings having a hollow hood et its front end, the top wall of said hood being rovided with i t the upper shoulder of a oriu butt, shouldered looking tr-loclr. insortihle through the side walls'of said hood and erronged to engage the lower sho of drew her butt and a short holt iosor through the bottom wall of said hood the head of Said bolt, When the letter in opera.- tive position, being located Within a slot on -the underfece of the block. 7
In Witness that I claim the foregoing have hereunto subscribed my name 15th day of July, 1916.
