`To aZZ wlw/m, t may concern."
Beit known that I, HEDLEY WATTY, a citizen of the United States, residingv at Groton, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Holders, of which the following is a specification. r
This invention relates broadly to illuminating burners, and more Vparticularly to an improvement indevic'es wherebythe chimney of the usual liquid fuel burning lamp may be securely held ,thereuponf It is the principal objectof the invention, to provide a device-*of the character stated, whereby, the chimney of the lamp will be engaged by suitable means for preventing` accidental dislodgment thereof, under all conditions.
Among the aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a chimney holding device in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and eiiiciency and operation high.
vThe invention may be stated briey, to comprehend, a plurality of hooks which are connected with the chimney 4by means of eyelets arranged thereon, these hooks being engageable with the burner. Springs are arranged upon the hooks in order that the same may be extended and also, to afford a yieldable connection.
Other and further improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the description toifollow, which for a clear understanding of the invention, to be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof, and wherein. the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of illustration.
In the drawings Y Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp with my improved attachment applied thereto, and
Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of the securing hooks.
With more particular reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, it mav be stated, that I have indicated the usual liquid fuel burning lamp by the numeral l, including with this` the usual burner, while the chimney is desiga nated by the numeral 2. It is of course under-stood, that the burner'is provided with a plurality of engaging arms whereby the lower portion of the chimney 2" is retained in proper position, upon the burner of the lamp, this being the usual construction and 'therefore forms no'part Aof the present invention. In the ,preferred embodimentfof my inve'ntion, I form upon the chimney 2', at vpoints(adjacenty thefbase thereof, a pluirality o f eyelets which are generally indicated by the numeral 8. VIt is to bewunderstood, tliatthesefeyele'ts may be blown with the lamp chimney' during the making thereofLor if so desired, may be attached thereto in any mannerv as known to the art. With these eyelets 3, I engagearms 4, looping the same as at 5, in order that the same may be maintained in connection therewith.
Specification of Letters Patent. v Patented Oct. l9 1917.
In describing the construction of these arms in detail, attention is directed to the fact,
that each arm is constructed inexact accordance and therefore mention will be made Y of but one in the detailed description to follow. The hooks 4e comprise a strip of'bendable metal, the lower end of .which is bent inwardly to constitute a hooked portion 6,
while contractile springs of the coiled type. 1 S5 i designated as 7, are formed with the arms 4., substantially intermediatethe ends thereof. Finger loops 8 are formed upon' the lower extremities of the arms and provide for means whereby the various hooks may be readily disengaged from theunderface of the lamp burner when it is desired to remove the chimney 2 from the lamp. The finger pieces 8 fully well serve as means whereby the hooks may be engaged with the underface of said lamp burner, in applying the chimney to the lamp.
From the foregoing, it will be understood,
that when thevuser desires to place the chimney 2 upon a lamp burner, the same is iirst i engaged with the resilient engaging arms as` arranged upon the burner in the usual manner. The linger pieces 8 as arranged upon the arms 4 and then engaged whereupon the hook portions 6 as formed upon the lower extremities of said arms may be readily moved into engagement with the underside of the lamp burner. 'When the hooks have beenv engaged with the lamp burner in the manner as above described.A it is obvious that accidental displacement of the shade, due to shifting of the lamp will be positively prevented, also,- that the contractile coiled;
wprings 7 as formed in the arms l will serve as means i' r applying a constant pull upon the said chimney, thus, retaining` the same upon its seat. It Will be readily understood that should the user desire to remove the shade chimney, the action Will be vice-versa;
"While l have herein disclosed a specific embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent to persons skilled in thev art, that the invention is capable of embodiment in other forms and devices diiiering in detail and arrangement from that shown as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is l. A device of the character described, ineluding,in combination With a lamp chimney having a plurality of eyelets arranged thereon, of arms connected With said eyelets and having springs formed integral therewith intermediate the end portions thereof, and hooks formed upon the lower extremities of said arms engageable with lt'orn'ied therein 1 ,24ans the burner oi' a lamp and adapted to yieldably secure the chimney to these arms.
2. A device of the character described, including, in combination With a lamp having a plurality of eyelets arranged thereon adjacent the base portion, or' arms formed from bendable material connected with Vsaid eyelets, said arms having coiled springs intermediate the ends thereof, hooks formed upon the remaining` ends of the arms engageable With the burner of a lamp whereby the chimney may be yieldably held thereon, and inger loops arranged upon said arms to facilitate the enlgagement and disengagement of the arms to and from the burner.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of tivo Witnesses.
