IMPROVEMENT IN WARDROBE CLOTHESDRIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,247, dated March 5, 1872.

SPECIFICATION.

I, BENONI S. BROWN, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a Tardi-cbc Clothes-Drier, ot' which the following is a specification:

My present improvements relate to an invention secured to me by Letters Patent of the United States, No. 100,114. The former invention consisted of the arrangement in a vertical iiue of an endless rack on Which the clothes were arranged, and elevated and lowered by rotating the rack. My present appa* ratus is more especially designed for dwellinghonses occupied by several families, in which a clothes-drier is arranged on each door, and made capable of being Operated independent of the other driers in the house. My invention consists, first, in thecombination, with a Avertical main tine, preferably arranged in one ot' the Walls of the building, of a case or Wardrobe, provided with suitable racks for the reception or' the clothes or other articles to be dried, and communicating with the main due, so that a draft is created through said Wardrobe, whereby the articles contained therein are speedily dried 5 second,in the combination inthe wardrobe of two series of removable clothesraclis or frames, arranged one above the other, and secured in place in the Wardrobe, as hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure I is an elevation ot' :my improved clothes-drier. Fig. II is a sectional elevation at right angles to Fig. I. Fig. III is a sectional plan View of the apparatus. Fig. IV is sectional elevation ot' a portion of a building provided with my improved apparatus.

A represents the body of the closed upright box or case, A1 the top, and A2 the bottom thereof. B is the door forming the lower pon tion ofthe front of the case A 5 the upper portion of the latter, which is out of convenient reach, may he fixed or stationary, as shown in the drawing. The case or box A reaches from the door to the ceiling, or nearly so, and resembles in appearance an ordinary wardrobe. b are the openings formed in the lower portion of the door B for the admission of the air, and c the opening in the back of the case A near its top for the escape of the damp air. E E represents two series ot' racks or frames, consisting of two side pieces, e e, and cross-bars e', on which the clothing to be dried is placed. The racks E are arranged in the upper halt' of the case A and slide in vertical Ways g. They are secured in place by spring catches Ii, constructed with inclined heads, so that they will automatically engage With the racks E as they are slid upward in place in the ways g. These racks are disengaged in an obvious Ina-nner by withdrawing the catches h. The racks E extend from the bottoni of the casing A, on which they rest, to the middle thereof, and are kept apart by blocks f. The racks E are rst filled with clothes and introduced into the Wardrobe A, and secured in place, when the racks E are lled with clothes and placed in the wardrobe, which operations can be easily performed. H, in Fig. IV, represents a vertical due arranged in one of the Walls of the building, and extending from the bottom to the top thereof. is are horizontal Ilnes or pipes preferably provided with danipers t', connecting each of the several clothes-driers with the main flue H.

The racks with the clothes arranged thereon being placed in the Wardrobe A the door B is closed and the damper t' opened, whereby a strong draiightthrough thewardrobeiscreated, which qnickl y dries the cloth es contained therein. This draught through the Wardrobe also serves to ventilate the apartment in which the Wardrobe is placed. After the clothes are dried and ironed they can be replaced in the wardrobe, which is thus made to serre a double purpose.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the main flue H, of the case or Wardrobe A, communicating with the former, and provided with suitable racks for the reception of the clothes, substau tially as and for the purpose hereinbei'ore set forth.

2. The combination, with the Wardrobe A, of the series of racks E E', arranged substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
