JOHNSON and BENTON SILLoWAY, both of the city of Montpelier, in the county of Washington, and State ofVermont,'have made an invention of a new and useful Improvement in Gloth'es-Driers; and do hereby declare the following to be afnll, clear, and exact description thereof, due rei'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of our invention, spread ready toreceive the clothes to be dried.

Figure 2 is a vertical view of the chier', closed or folded together.

Figure 3 is a vertical section.

The iuventiolncomprising the subject-matter of this patent, has reference to those clothes-driers .or racks which may be folded when not in use,'so that they may be out of the way, eoonomizing room, and yet be ready for use at any moment.

In the drawings, before mentioned as accompanying this specification, and which illustrate our invention- A represents the side or support of the frame.

B is a slide, towhich is attached an arm, O, by means of a hinge, a., arranged to slide up or'down, at pleasure1 Vin the grooves b b.

An airangement for holding the slide B at Whatever position it may be placed is shown at c.

On the sides of the arm C areV placed the arms D D, secured bythe hinges l d, and retained in their ex-v tended position by the bolt e. l

The lines, to which is suspended the clothing to be dried, are shown at f j, 85o. A pulley, E, is used with the cord g, to support the outer end ofthe arm C when in use.

The` operation of our invention is very simple and convenient. When not in use it is as shown in iigs. 2 and 3.

When the clothes are to he dried, and ready to be hung, the slide B is lowered, by pressing the projection at c to aconvenient height, when Vthe arms-DD are spread or swung outward on their hinges d d, and

the bolt e slipped into its sockets, retaining the arms D D in their extended position, and thearm C raised to a horizontal position, turning upon its hinge a by means ofthe pulley E and cord g, which is secured to a suitable peg in the bottom of the slide B.

The slide B may be placed at a convenient height to hang the clothes upon the lines f f, when the rack and clothes may be raised to as greata height as desired. v

This'clothes-drier may be used in the laundry, by attaching the case to the Wall, yor it may be used on the outside of thehouse in the same manner, or it may be attached to a post in the yard, or ou the top of the house, and in case of a post, .a case might be used on each side, thusma-king the complete circuit.

Gases might be erected out of doors, and also-one in the laundry, and the rack and slide B used ont of doors if it be pleasant, or in the house if stormy.

fIhe facility with which this invent-ion may be madev ready for use, either within or out of doors, its simplic'it'y and extreme cheapness, and thev conveniencev of lowering the'frame whilevk hanging the clothes, are among the advantages claimed.
