ADJUSTABLE SINGLE-PEDESTAL FURNITURE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dot. 2, 1917.
Application filed. September 20,1916. Serial No. 121,273.
useful Improvements in Adjustable Single- Pedestal Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
This inventlon relates to improvements in adjustable single pedestal furniture, such for instance as school desks and chairs and typewriter tables and chairs, and of that class in-which a desk, table, or the like and a seat or chair are both supported by and vertically adjustable on a single pedestal, the object of the invention being to effect improvements in the construction of the pedestal and of the desk and seat adjusting means.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed:
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of an adjustable school desk, school seat, and single pedestal support therefor, constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail plan of the desk bracket.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the standard and the desk and chair brackets and their securing dogs on a larger scale and on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4L is a detail sectional view on the planes indicated by the line 4 41 of Fig. 3.
.Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the dogs.
Fig. 6 is a detail plan of the seat bracket.
The pedestal 1 is in accordance with my invention provided in opposite sides with vertical slots 2 and with a vertical series of ratchet teeth 3 in the said slots, the points of the ratchet teeth being spaced from the periphery of the-pedestal. v
A pair of brackets 4;, 5, are carried by and vertically adjustable on the pedestal, the said brackets projecting in opposite directions from the pedestal and the bracket 1 being here shown as supporting a school desk 6, the bracket 5 being shown as supporting a school seat 7 which has a back 8. Various articles of furniture may be supported by the brackets in accordance with my invention and within the scope of the sitely curved arms 9 and the bracket 5 is shown 'as comprising a single arm lOahaving lateral extensions 11 at opposite sides. The said brackets are provided with suitable screw holes to enable the articles of furniture to be securely fastened thereon.
Each bracket has a hub portion 12, provided with a .vertical central opening, through which .the pedestal extends, and
each bracket is vertically adjustable on'the pedestal so that the seat and desk or other articles of furniture carried on the brackets appended claims. The said brackets may also be of any suitable construction; the bracket 4 1s shown as provided with oppomay be adjusted vertically as may be desired andthus adapted for the convenience and use of persons of various heights. In
opposite sides of each bracket hub arevertical inwardly opening slots 13, each of said slots having a widened upper portion 14E. Sald slots are coincident with the slots 2 of the pedestal. In each slot 13 is a dog 15 which is pivotally mounted as at 16 and which comprises a lower arm 17 adapted to enter one of the slots 2 and engage the ratchet teeth 8. Each dog also has a widened upper arm 18 arranged for movement in the broadened upper'portion of the slot and also arrangedat a suitable angle with respect to the lower arm 17. Each upper arm has an outwardly extending button'19 which is normally arranged in an opening .20 to the bracket hub and which communicates with the widened upper portion 14 of the slot. The dogs have their lower ends 17 normally held in engaged position with reference to the ratchet teeth by means of springs 21. The arms 17'of the dogs are of the same width as the slots 2 'of the pedestal and the narrowed lower portions of the bracket slots so that said dogs when engaged coact with the slots 2 to prevent turning movement of the brackets on the pedestal.
When it is desired to move either of the brackets upwardly, the dogs permit such movement and coact with the ratchet teeth to support the bracket in such adjusted position. If it be desired to lower either of the brackets, this may be done by first depressing the buttons 19 of the dogs of such bracket, thus causing the upper arms of the dogs to bear against the periphery of the pedestal and the lower arms of the dogs to move outwardly against the tension of the springs 21 and thus disengage the'pedestal form, proportion and construction of theseveral parts within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the, invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a pedestal having a slot and teeth in'the bottom of said slot in combination with a bracket adjustable on the pedestal and having an opening through which the pedestal extends, said bracket also having a slot provided with a portion coextensive in width with and also coincident with the pedestal slot, and also having a broadened portion, and a dog pivotally mounted in the slot of the bracket and having a relatively narrow portion in the narrow portion of said bracket slot and to enter the pedestal slot and engage a tooth, the dog being further provided with a broadened portion arranged in the broadened portion of the bracket slot and adapted to bear against the pedestal, when the dog is turned to disengaged position.
2. In a device of the class described, a pedestal having a slot and teeth in the bottom of said slot in combination with a bracket adjustable on the pedestal and hav,
ing an opening through which the pedestal extends, said bracket also having a slot provided with a portion'coeXtensive in width with and also coincident-with the pedestal slot, and also having a broadened portion, and a dog pivotally mounted in the slot of the bracket and having a relatively narrow portion in the narrow portion of said bracket slot and to enter the pedestal slot and engage a tooth, the dog being further provided with a broadened portion arranged in the broadened portion of the bracket slot and adapted to bear against the pedestal, when the dog is turned to disengaged position, said broadened portion of the dog also having a press button on its outer side and said bracket having an opening to clear said press button.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
