MANDOLIN BOVI' OR PICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application filed March 27, 1917. Serial No. 157,775.
. b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS TAYLOR GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ulm, in the county of Cascade and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Mandolin Bow or Pick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. My invention relates to a device combining in effect the properties of a violin bow and a mandolin pick. An object of the invention is to provide a device which will produce a softer tone on the mandolin than that obtained by an ordinary pick, which is easy to manipulate, and which will afford a wider range of movement.
I attain the above and other objects of my invention by the structure conventionally disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a front elevation. of my device;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 22, Fig. l, the strings of the mandolin being shown in section as they would appear when the device is in use;
Fig. 3 is a bottom-up plan view of the de vice; and
Fig. l: is a cross section on line ll Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 is a linger grip, preferably having-concave faces which merge into a head 6 that flares out from the faces and presents a convex cylindrical surface 7 extending between the flared parts of the head. ,he head 6 has recesses S at the junction of the faces with the head for plugs or keys 9 which look the ends of the hair 10 within the recesses 8 whereby the hair is drawn tight on the cylindrical surface 7.
The hair 10 being stretched on a convex face permits the engagement of said hair with any one of the strin s of the mandolin without interference with the other strings of the mandolin, as can be seen from Fig. 2. The device is held in the same manner as a pick, moving the hair 10 at right angles to the strings of the mandolin.
I claim:
I. A device for actuating the strings of a mandolin comprising a body presenting a hand grip, said body having a head terminating in a convex cylindrical surface, hair on the head, and means for securing the hair to said head along the cylindrical surface.
2. A device for actuating the strings of a mandolin comprising a body having concave faces and a head Haring from said concave faces and having a convex cylindrical sur face, said bodv having recesses in proximity to the head, keys for said recesses, and hair encompassing the cylindrical surface and re tained in said recesses by said keys.
