SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,730, dated February 23, 1897.
Application led July 9, 1896. Serial No. 598,531. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern/.-
Be it known that I, LoUIs A. EBERHARDT, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Toy, of Which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to a toy of novel construction and in which a metallic body is to be moved along a base-plate between the two shanks or poles of a horseshoe magnet until it arrives at the center of the magnet. Owing to the attraction exerted by both magnetshanks upon the moving body, the latter is liable to be deflected to the right or left and out of its course, so that considerable skill is required to properly manipulate the toy.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 2 2, Fig. l.
The letter a represents a base-plate of an open shallow box, of which b is the side or rim. Within one end of the box a there is secured a horsehoe magnet c, the poles of which point to the free or unoccupied section a of the box, so that the channel a2, inclosed between the magnet-Shanks, merges into the section a. The inner edges of the magnetshanks are provided with inwardly-projecting shoulders c', having beveled edges c2, and forming a narrow passage between them. At
vthe center of the magnet-a notch or harbor c3 may be provided.
A small metallic object d, such as a boat, is placed upon the free section a of the baseplate and is moved by a stick e between the magnet-shanks and into the harbor. Owing to the attraction exerted upon the object d on both of its sides, it is very liable to be deected out of its course and to contact with LOUIS A. EBERHARDT.
