IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-OPENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,129, dated February 27, 1872.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, l/VM. GOULD, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Box-Openers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a side view and partial section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of my invention.

This invention has relation to an improved tool for raisin g the lids of boxes; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of a pair of pivoted levers, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, Arepreseuts a metal lever constructed with a wide wedgeshaped end, B, in which is cuta longitudinal slot, (J, the sides of which diverge as they approach the edge of the wedge-shaped end. B represents a metal lever, bent to form a handle at b, and constructed with a bifurcated or V- sha-ped wedge-end D, which fits closely within the slot O, and turns on a pivot, d. The faces of the end D coincide with those of the end B.

In order to open a box the levers are closed together and their wedge ends inserted or driven into the seam, after which they are separated, raisin g the lid of the box sutticiently to extract the nails. It will be observed that the handles of the levers are arranged in such a way that B may be conveniently held While the operator strikes the end of the lever A with a hammer or mallet. The bent or shoulder part b of the lever B obviates all difficulty in separating the levers.

The object of the V-shaped notch in the end of the lever B is to allow it to be used for extracting nails, and being driven into seams where there are such. When the lever B is used for extracting n ails it should be separated from A by removing; the pivot d.

To prevent breaking, the ends B D should be made of steel.

I claim as my invention The box-opener herein described, consisting of the lever A, having the slotted wed ge-shaped end O, and lever B, constructed with the shulder 1) and V-shaped wed ge-end l), substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
