Description

April 18, 1950 E. BREHMER EXPANDING CHISEL Filed 0G11. 29, 1947 INVENTOR.
Patented Apr. 18, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to an expanding chisel.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a chisel which may be used for the removing of baseboards and casings which can be expanded to separate the same from the building wall and whereby such operations can be eiected without damage to either the wall or the board.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an expanding chisel which is of simple construction, easy to operate, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, compact and ecient in operation.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the chisel embodying the features of the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view taken through the chisel 'with the expanding bar in its lowered position,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the chisel with the expanding bar elevated,
Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the chisel with the expanding bar elevated,
Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively transverse sectional views taken on lines 5 5 and 6--6 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the figures, I represents the main blade of the chisel which has a cutting edge II and a rearwardly and upwardly inclined integral handle rod I2. The main part or blade I0 has a longitudinally-extending slot I3 for the reception of an expanding bar I4 and links I5 by which the bar I4 is connected to the blade Il] for movement into and out of the slot I3. The links I are arranged in pairs and are pivoted to the opposite sides of the slot I3. Recesses I6 are provided in the sides of the slot I3 and receive the links l5. Screws Il attach the links to the blade I0 and the bar I4.
The forward end of the bar I4' is beveled as indicated at I8 to i'lt beveled end I9 of the slot I3 of the blade. On the handle I2 there is fixed a U-shaped member 2I by weld 22. This member 2| has separated upstanding projectionsthrough i which extend a pivot pin 23 to connect an operating handle 24 theeto This operating handle 213 has a downwardly bent forward end and rises above the raised integral handle I2 of the blade IIJ.
The bar I4 has an upwardly and rearwardly inclined or bent portion 25 with a narrow section 2B adapted to receive operating links 2l connected to the operating handle 24 by a pivot pin 28. The links 21 are connected with the section 26 by a pivot pin 29.
In operation the chisel is inserted between a wall and a baseboard while the bar I4 is within the slot I3. When once fully in rear of the baseboard, the operating handle 24 can be depressed so as to cause the bar I4 to'be elevated out of the slot I3 and effect a lifting action upon the baseboard being removed from the wall. This operation can be effected with little more difficulty than with a straight chisel and neither the board not the wall will be bruised or damaged.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as dened by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an expanding chisel, a main blade provided `vin'th a longitudinally extending slot, an inclined handle rod projecting rearwardly from said main blade, an expanding bar mounted for movement into and out of said slot, a plurality of links pivotally connecting said expanding bar to said main blade, an upwardly and rearwardly inclined portion projecting from said expanding bar, said inclined portion terminating in a narrow section, an operating handle pivotally connected to said handle, and means for pivotally connecting said operating handle to said narrow section.
2. In an expanding chisel, a main blade provided with a longitudinally extending slot, an inclined handle rod projecting rearwardly from said main blade, an expanding bar mounted for movement into and out of said slot, a plurality of links pivotally connecting said expanding bar to said main blade, there being a plurality of spaced recesses arranged in said main blade for receiving said links when said expanding bar is positioned in said slot, an upwardly and rearwardly inclined portion projecting from said expanding bar, said inclined portion terminating in a narrow section, an operating handle pivotally connected to said handle rod, and means embodying a pair of links for pivotally connecting said operating handle to said narrow section.
EUGENE BREHMER.
