J ELWIN JAR/GO, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA;
W. W. BENEDICT ADMINISTRATOR OF SAID J ELI/VIN JARGO DECEASED.
BOOK-REST.
Application filed July 28, 1915, Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ELWIN Janoo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Itests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to'book rests and has as its object to provide an article of this class adapted to support a boo-k in such manner that it may be conveniently read and without the necessity of the book being held in the hand.
Another aim of the invention is to provide an article of this class which will occupy but little space and will not require any floor base or any attaching means for its successful use.
Another aim of the invention is to so construct the device that it will be light in weight and may be manufactured from a single length of wire.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating one manner of using the device embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the upper end of the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The device embodying the present invention is preferably formed from a single length of wire bent to the required shape, although if desired it may be formed from several lengths of wire suitably bent and connected, and the device consists, generally speaking, of a supporting standard provided at its lower end with a limb engaging member and at its upper end with a book supporting member.
As before stated, the device is preferably formed from a single length of wire and in forming the device this length of wire is first bent at opposite sides of a point midway between its ends, as indicated by the numeral 1, so as to form a book supporting ledge comprising a forward cross piece 2 extending between the bends 1 and lateral or Specification of Letters Patent.

side supporting portions 3 which extend at right angles rearwardly from the portion 2. The side portions 3 are of such length as to be adapted to support any book of ordinary thickness, and in order that the book may be further supported, the strand of wire is bent upwardly along converging lines to provide portions a which occupy a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the ledge above described. At the upper ends of the portions l the wire is twisted, as at 5, and the two portions thereof are thence bowed laterally in opposite directions to form supporting portions 6 against which the back boards of the book may rest, that portion of the back of the book which connects the back boards, or, in other words, the portion which ordinarily bears the title, being received at its lower portion between the supporting members 1, the lower ends of the bows 6 extending behind the said supporting portions a in the manner clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. Below the lower ends of the bows or loops 6, the portions of the wire are twisted together as indicated at 7 to form the standard of the device, the lowermost twist terminating a suitable distance below the lower ends of the said portions of the wire. Below the said lowermost twist, the: lowermost portions of the wire are bent laterally in opposite directions to form downwardly diverging engaging members 8 which constitute the limb engaging base for the said standard.
One manner of using the device is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, in which figure the base of the standard is disposed upon the readers lap and the standard is allowed rest against the edge of a table or the like so that the book will be supported in convenient position for reading. If desired, instead of resting the standard against the edge of a table or similar support, the standard may be grasped in one hand and the device in this manner may be supported at the desired angle.
Having thus described the invention, is claimed as new is:
A book rest formed from a single length of wire bent between its ends to form a book what supporting ledge and thence having its side ed together to form a standard and the ends portions extending upwardly in converging of the said portions below the twisted standlines and twisted together and thence bent ard portion being bent laterally to diverge 10 to form oppositely extending bows forming in a downward direction.
5 a book rest located above said supporting In testimony whereof I affix my signaledge and in back thereof, the said side por- V ture. tions of the wire below the bows being twist- J ELWIN 'J ARGO. [L. s]
