HENRY M. MANHEIM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed June 10. 1907. Serial No. 378-181.
,To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that HENRY M. MANHEIM, a citizen of the United. States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to racks ad apted to be applied to chairs and'similar articles, and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described. I
The object of the invention is to provide a rack of simple and cheap construction which may be easily and readily applied to a chair back, as for instance a theater chalr, and which consists of a hollow standard so mounted that it may turn axially, and which is provided with a telescoping arm which may be swung at an angle to the standard and lodged in a recess provided therein, and when so located isadapted to serve as a support for a hat, coat or other article of clothing.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the rack with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective v1ew of a standard constitutingpart of the rack. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a clip for securin the rack, and Fig. 4. is a perspective view 0 a ferrule for supporting the rack.
The rack consists of the tubular standard 1, which is reduced in its internal diameter, as at 2, at its upper end, and is provided ad- ]acent its upper end and in one side with a recess 3. The standard 1 is provided at a point intermediate of its ends with a lug 4 outstanding therefrom and struck up from the metal thereof. standard 1 is open and rests upon a ferrule 5, which is provided at one side with a screw 6 .adapted to be inserted in the back of the chair. The circular portion 7 of the clip 8 is slipped over the upper end of the standard 1, and the wings 9 of the said clip are secured against the back of the chair by means of The lower edge of the ring 7 rests upon the lug 4, so
that the standard 1 may turn axially in the ring 7 and upon the ferrule 5. The arm 11 is provided at its lower end with an enlarged head 12,'which fits snugly within thei'standard 1. The arm 11 is inserted in the standard 1 at the lower end thereof. Theupper end of the arm 11 is provided with an The lower end of the enlarged head 13 which is screwed upon the reduced portion 14 of the said arm. The head 13 is of greater diameter than the standard 1. When the rack is not in use the arm 11 is slipped vertically within the standard 1, and the head 13 rests upon the upper end thereof. When the rack is used for supporting articles as described. the arm 11 is slipped longitudinally within the standard 1 until the head 12 comes in contact with the reduced end 2 thereof, when the said arm 11 is permitted to fall laterally and enter the recess 3. When in this position the said arm may be used as a peg or support for an article of clothing. At the same time the said arm may turn with the standard 1; thus it may be moved out of the way and is specially adapted to be used in theaters where the occupants of the seats along the row may desire to gain entrance or have exit therefrom.
The parts are preferably made of metal and are of an ornamental nature, take up small space and are not calculated to interfere with the view of those sitting in the rear.
What is claimed is 1. A rack comprising a hollow standard, a ferrule supporting the lower end thereof, said standard being formed with a lug intermediate of its ends and having its upper end reduced and provided with a recess, a clip resting upon said lug, and an arm arranged to slide within the standard and enter the recess thereof and having at its ends enlarged heads adapted to limit the movement of the arm in the standard.
2. A. rack comprising a hollow standard, a ferrule supporting the lower end thereof, said ferrule having a portion adapted to fit within the end of the standard and a screw adapted to enter a support, said standard having its upper end reduced and provided with a recess, and an arm arranged to slide within the standard and enter the recess thereof and having at its ends enlarged heads adapted to limit the movement of the arm in the standard.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY M. MANHEIM.
