Description

L. V. BOONE.
TOOL HANDLE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 28. 1917.
l ,24 1 1 89 v Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
amuemtoz LESUE Boom:
L FE
sawrns PATENT LESLIE VASTINE BOON'E, OF BRIDGEPORT, CALIFORNIA.
' TOOL-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
' Application filed May as, 1917. Serial No. 171,521.
sectional construction of the handle, whereby the several parts or sections can be easily and quickly connected to each other or disconnected and compactly stored away in a relatively small space.
proved sectional handle as applied to a spade, the invention may also be advantageously used in connection with various other kinds of tools.
10 designates the intermediate section of the handle and 11 the end section thereof. Each of these handle sections is of hollow or tubular form, as shown. It is to be understood that, if desired, any additional number of handle sections may be provided.
The bore of the handle section 10,- in
spaced relation to one of its ends, is con-' tracted or reduced in diameter as shown at 12, to provide a relatively thick wall, and at the end of this Wall, screw threads ind? cated at 13 are formedthere'onat diametrically opposite points, said threads extend- It is also another object of my invention/ingthrough an arc of 90. The flaring end to provide a sectional handle for "spades,
particularly designed for use by autoists or tourists, having the above noted desirable feature, the improved handle being qulte simple in its construction, as well as strong and durable, and capable of manufacture at relatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, the several handle sections being-connected to each other;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 I of Fig. 1; r
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the male end of one of the handle sections.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5
I designates the blade of a spade which is preferably provided with a tapering, pointed end indicated at 6, so that it will readily penetrate the soil. The other or inner end edge of the blade 5 has a flange 7 formed thereon so as to prevent cutting of the shoe of the user when pressure is exerted upon this end of the blade to force the point thereof into the ground. A curved shank 8 is suit-ably secured at one of its ends to the blade 5, or may be integrally formed therewith. This shank is hollow and gradually increases in diameter to its open end as shown at 9. It is to be understood that while I have herein referred to my im- 9 of the shank 8 which is fixed to the blade 5, is provided with similar interrupted screw threads 14. The other end of the intermediate handle section 10 and one end of the handle section 11 is reduced, as shown at 15, and the terminal portion thereof is provided with exterior screw threads 16 on diametrically opposite sides thereof, said threads likewise extending through arcs of substantially 90 and the other side faces of the reduced pofiions 15 of the handle sections being flattened, as indicated at In assembling the sections of the handle, it will be understood that the male end 15 of the handle section 10 is inserted into the flaring end 9 of the shank 8, the threads 16"thereon being opposed to the unthreaded sides of said shank and positioned between the interrupted threads 1 1 thereon. The handle section 10 is then given a quarter turn so that the threads 16 will interlock with the threads 11-. The other handle section 11 is then connected in a similar manner The several sections of the handle may be connected together to also produce a tool handle which is extremely strong and durable. In view of the very simple construc= tion of the device, it will be readily appar cut that the same can be manufactured and soldat relatively small cost. a V
' While I have herein shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement -of the several parts employed, it is to be invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my inven-d tion, what I vdesire to claim and'secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. The combination with a tool body, of a tubular shank fixed thereto, a sectional J handle, the handle sections being provided with means for detachable interlocking connection to each other, one of said handle sections having a reduced extension provided with threads on diametrically opposite sides thereof and flattened faces extending between said threads, said tubular shank being provided with internal interrupted threads for engagement by the threads on the extension of said handle section.
2. In combination, a tool body, a tubular shank fixed to said body, a tubular sectional handle, one of the handle sections having a reduced end .to fit within said tubular shank and provided with exterior, interrupted screw threads, said shank having interior, interrupted screw threads on its wall for interlockingengagement with" the screw threads on the extension of the handle section, the other end of said handle section having its bore contracted in spaced relation to the end of said handle section'and provided with interior *screw threads in pposed relation to each other and the other handle section having a reduced -ma1e extension provided with exterior-screw threads on diametrically opposite sides thereof and flattened faces between said threaded portions, said threads being terlocking engagement wlth the interior, interrupted screw threads on the first named handle section. j
In testimony whereof I hereunto afl'x my signature'in the presence of two witnesses.
. LESLIE VASTINE BOONE.
