To all whom it may concern.'
'Be it known that I, LEE WHITTAKER, a
'citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, county of Butler, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon- Burners, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention relates to hydrocarbon burners and particularly to such burners as are especially adapted for use in conjunction with furnaces of various types and for various purposes.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved hydrocarbon burner which shall be economical in the consumption of fuel and which shall produce an intense heat. A further object of my invention is to provide a burner of the character mentioned in which there shall be no appreciable accumulation of unatomized oil. A further object of my invention is to provide a burner of the class mentioned of such construction and arrangement that the same will inject the atomized fuel directly into the furnace, and at the same time will be protected against carbonization of the fuel, to the end that the full value of the fuel may be utilized and the burner shall not become choked, thereby avoiding the necessity of shutting down the furnace or any particular burner thereof for the purpose of cleaning and readjusting. A furtherobject of my invention is to provide in a hydrocarbon burner means for thoroughly atomizing the fuel and completely incor-` porating the same with a sufficient quantity of air under any desired pressure and injecting the same into the furnace with suliciently increased velocity. A further object of my invention is to provide in a hydrocarbon burner improved means for atomizing the oil. A further object of my invention is to provide a burner of the class mentioned of such construction as to avoid leaking or seeping of the oil through the ]oints or connectionsof the same. A further object of my invention is to provide a burner of the 1 character mentioned which shall be economical both to install and maintain. Uther objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a shell or body portion provided with means for supplying air under pressure thereto and equipped with an oil spraying nozzle therein and a diaphragm formed of a plurality of layers of wire mesh againstv which the jet from the oil. nozzle is directed,` said diaphragm being convex toward the nozzle whereby the oil. sprayed from the nozzle is mixed with the air under pressure and dashed forcibly against the'wire diaphragm where the oil is further minutely divided and thoroughly incorporated with the air. My invention further consists in a hydrocarbon burner as above specified in which the oil is sprayed from the nozzle in the form of a thin cone in which the base of the cone where it strikes the mesh diaphragm is of slightly less diameter than the exposed face of the diaphragm, to the end that there shall be no accumulation of dead oil not thoroughly broken up and atomized by said diaphragm. My invention further consists in a hydrocarbon burner as above specified further characterized by being equipped with a discharge nozzle beyond the diaphragm which shall be contracted at its discharge end to more thoroughly incorporate the air and oil particles and to inject the atomized fuel into thefurnace under a greater velocity than that within the body of the device. My invention further consists in a hydrocarbon burner consisting of a body portion or shell equipped with oil atomizing and air mixing means and a discharge nozzle and characterized bya cooling chamber arranged about said nozzleso that a passage of cool air is maintained about the nozzle while in use, to the end that the nozzle is maintained at a temperature below' that which would carbonize the oil particles Withinv the same. My invention further consists in the arrangement of said cooling chamber and nozzle within the furnace wall whereby the same are further protect ed from the heat of radiation of the furnace.

Arranged within the body portion 1 is an oil nozzle 5 which is slightly contracted atits discharge end as indicated at 6 and equipped with a conical valve seat 7. Coperatlng with the valve seat 7 is a conical valve 8, the stem 9 of which projects through the end of the device and is equipped with a threaded portion 10 and handle 11 by means of which the opening between the valve seat 7 and valve 8 may be nicely regulated. 12 indicates an oil supply pipe communicating with the nozzle 5. It is obvious that when oil is supplied to the nozzle under pressure the same will be ejected from the nozzle in the form of a cone, and by adjusting the valve 8 so that there is but a minute space between the same and the valve seat, the conical sheet of oil issuing from the nozzle will be very thin. Arranged within the path of the oil ejected from the nozzle 5 is a dia hragm13. This is formed' of a plurality oi) layers 14, 15, 16, of wire mesh, preferabl fine wire mesh, so that the oil thrown forci ly against the same will be divided into minute particles. To assist in such division of the oil, said diaphragm is convexly formed with the convex portion extended toward the nozzle as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawing. It is obvious that by multi lying the layers of Iliragm that the oil will be more minutely divided. Also, to avoid the accumulation of dead oil in the chamber 2 the arrangement is such that `the entire portion of the spray `from the nozzle will strike the diaphra without' first touching the walls of the c amber; that is, the diaphragm is so arranged with relation to the nozzle that the base of the conical spray is less thanV the diameter of the exposed portion of the diaphragm.

The discharge end of the nozz e 17 is contracted as at 24 to more thoroughly ncorporate the oil and air before discharging the same into the furnace and to increase the velocity at the timeof the discharge. With the construction above set forth 1t is obvious that oil and air may be supplied under very slight pressure and that the oil will be thoroughly atomized and incorporated with the air and then injected under sutilcient velocity into the furnace.
With the construction and arrangement of most burners of this class the discharge nozzle is subjected to intense heat of radiation from the furnace resulting in carbonization of a portion of the oil within the nozzle or burner, thereby fouling the same and requiring the furnace or certain particular burners to be shut down for the purpose of cleaning and readjusting. One of the particular objects of my invention is to provide in a burner of this character means to prevent such carbonization and also the arrangement of the device whereby it is substantially protected from the heat of radiation of the furnace.y To thisend the nozzle 17 is provided with a surrounding' cooling chamber 25 which extends from a point adjacent the union 19 to a point preferably beyond the end of the nozzle. This member 1s provided with a plurality-of longitudinally extending grooves or channels-26 Yon its inner face whichextend vthroughout the major portion of the-length of the nozzle and the outer endsof these assage ways are enlarged as indicated at 2'? for the free admission of air. The inner `ends of the but. t0. Prevent channels are tapered toward the nozzle as indicated at 28 so as to direct the air into close contact with the nozzle throughout the remainder of its length. It is obvious that Athe discharge of fuel through the nozzle in Fig. 2, and the arrangement is such that it extends but part way through the furnace wall, preferably about half way. This further protects the elements from the'direct heat of radiation of the` furnace. Beyond the end of the chamber 25 the-openingin the furnace wall is flared as indicated at 31, for obvious reasons.
It is obvious that with a burner as above described the consumption of fuel will. be economical in that it is thoroughly atomized and completely mixed with the air before being discharged into the furnace and that the quantity of oil may be nicely regulated. Also there can be no appreciable accumula-4 tion of unatomized oil in the burner, and the burner is protected from carbonization of oil in any portion thereof. Also the burner may be operated with air under a very low pressure and at the same time be highly eiicient.
I claim:
1. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body provided with a discharge nozzle, air admission means intermediate the end s of said body, an oil nozzle in said body projecting beyond said air admission means and in alinement with said discharge nozzle and a diaphragm arranged between said oil nozzle and Said discharge nozzle, said diaphragm being formed of wire mesh and convex toward said oil nozzle, substantially as described.
2. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body provided with a discharge nozzle, air admission means intermediate the ends of said body, an oil nozzle arranged within said body in alinement with said discharge nozzle and extending beyond said air admission means, means at the end of said oil nozzle foi` spraying the oil in a thin conical sheet, and a diaphragm arranged between said oil nozzle and said discharge nozzle and of greater diameter than the base of the conical spray ejected against the same from said oil nozzle, substantially as described.
3. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a hollow body provided with a discharge nozzle, air admission means intermediate the ends of said body, an oil nozzle arranged within said body in alinement with said discharge nozzle and extending beyond said air admission means, means at the end of said oil nozzle for spraying the oil in a thin conical sheet, anda diaphragm arranged between -said oil nozzle and said discharge nozzle and of greater diameter than the base of the conical spray ejected against,
the same from said oil nozzle, and said diaphragm being formed of wire mesh and con` vex toward said oil nozzle, substantially as described.
4. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a body portion, air admission means, an oil nozzle within said body portion, means for intimately mixing the air and oil, a discharge nozzle comprising an elongated member tapered at the discharge end, and cooling means comprising a member surrounding said nozzle and provided on its inner face with a plurality of grooves forming air channels immediately adjacent said nozzle, the portions of said grooves adjacent said contracted portion of the nozzle being tapered to throw the air currents into contact with the end of the nozzle,\substan tially as described.
