To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Atomizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved atomizer which is capable of employment as an oil burner, and to a furnace front having an air supply capable of cooperating with the atomized fuel delivery in a novel and eflicient manner.

My improved atomizer or burner tube is constructed in manner to deliver from its nozzle atomized fuel swirling in one direction and the furnace front is provided with air passages directed tangentially toward said burner tube, in a manner to convey air toward a central air supply tube in" a swirl moving oppositely to the movement of the fuel that issues from the atomizer nozzle.
The oppositely .moving streams of fuel and air meeting in. a supply tube about the burner nozzle become more thoroughly commingled than if travelingin the samedirection, with the result that a high state of combustion is attained.
The atomizer construction comprises 'a' the frusto-conical portion 7 continuing from the outer perimeter of plug 5, and a central reduced cone 8 extends from the face of said portion, said cone being inset from the inner perimeter of the frusto-conical portion 7. cap 9 is adapted to be fitted upon the inner end of tube 1, as by male and female screw threads upon these respective members. Said cap 9 has a discharge orifice 10 atits forward end and has an internal conical wall 11, anterior to said orifice, to seat the frusto-conical portion 7, under the tension of spring 4. Under these circumstances, an annular space 12 exists between cone 8 and the surrounding wall 11, this space bein intended for the passage of fuel" the periphery of plate 15, to a central space 18 in said furnace front surrounding said burner tube. A constricted air 'supply tube 19 surrounds the nozzle of the burner tube, and forms the communication between said central space 18 and the furnace interior. The inwardly directed air assages 17 are bounded by partitions 20, wliich, instead of centering toward the burner tube, are arranged tangentially with respect thereto, whereby air traversing passages 17 whirls about tube 1 in space 18, and passes through air supply tube 19 with a swirling motion. It should be particularl noted that the tanent of the assages 1 is in the opposite direction to t e tangent of the grooves 14 in the atomizer plug, so that the whirling fuel streams and the whirling air supply are moving oppositely as they meet in tube 19.
The burner tube 1 has a jacket 21, spaced therefrom, and with perforations 22 extending forwardly andtangentially therethrough with res ect to said tube, t e tan ent of said per orations being opposite to t e tanent of the grooves 14 in the atomizer plug. iir from the main air sup ly enters said jacket through the perforations, serving to cool the burner tube, and whirls about said burner tube, issuing from said acket, about the burner nozzle, with a whirling motion opposite to the direction of movement of the atomized fuel, supplying at the genesis of the flame a suitable air admixture.
An approximately cone-faced valve 23 is slidable over jacket 21, to regulate the passing of air through tube 19, said valve having actuating rods 24. Also slidable over jacket 21, at its forward end, is an air de- -flector 25, which has rods 26 to control its movement.
I claim:
1. An atomizer consisting of a tube with a cap fitting removably thereover, said cap having a central orifice of diameter greater than its axial depth, a plug in said tube comprising a cylindrical portion and a frusto-conical portion, said cylindrical portion having longitudinal peripheral grooves and said frusto-conical portion having. tangential grooves in its face which communicate with said longitudinal grooves, and a diminished cone continuing from said frustoconical portion, in fixed relation therewith, toward said orifice; said cap forming a conical chamber anterior to said orifice, the wall of said chamber providing'a seat for said frusto-conical portion, and providing a space surrounding said diminished cone to form a permanent passage between said tangential grooves and said orifice, whereby fiuid enters said passage at an obtuse angle from the grooves, follows therefrom in the same conical zone into the aforesaid conical chamber, and forms therein a whirling film centering at the orifice for lateral dispersal upon emission from said orifice, and a spring seating in said tube and bearing against said plug, to firmly hold its frusto-conical portion against said conical chamber" wall.
2. An atomizer consisting of a tube with a cap fitting removably .thereover, said cap having a central orifice of diameter greater than its axial depth, a plug in said tube comprising a cylindrical portion and a frusto-conical portion, said cylindrical portion having longitudinal peripheral grooves and said frusto-conical portion having tangential grooves in its face which communicate with said longitudinal grooves, and a diminished cone continuing from said frusto-conical portion, in fixed relation therewith, toward said orifice, the rearward portion of said plug being of reduced diameter to provide a clearance between it and the tube; said cap forming a conical chamber anteriorto said orifice, the wall of said chamber providing a seat for said frustoconical portion, and providing a space surrounding said diminished cone to form a permanent passage between said tangential grooves and said orifice, whereby fluid enters said passage at an obtuse angle from the grooves, follows therefrom in the same conical zone into the aforesaid conical chamber, and forms therein a whirling film centering at the orifice for lateral dispersal upon emission from said orifice, and aspring seating in said tube and bearing against said plug, within the aforesaid clearance, to firmly hold its frusto-conical portion against said conical chamber wall.
