Description

A. COPONY.
YOKE FOR DRAFT RIGGINGS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 30. I914.
1 ,240, 948 Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
M x ii/w; u I 4) ATTORNEY ALFRED COPONY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
YOKE FOR DRAFT-RIGGING-S.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application filed November 30,1914. Serial No. 874,680.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALFRED CoroNY, a citizen of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and I State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Yokes for Draft- Riggings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in yokes for draft riggings.
An object of the invention is to provide a yoke for draft riggings which may be readily attached to and detached from a draw bar and which avoids the use of the usual rivets or coupler keys.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices, as herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a yoke embodying my improvements, the same being shown attached to an M. G. B. draw bar. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a hori zontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a vertical. sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In said drawing, the improved yoke is designated generally by the reference A and the same, as shown, comprises an upper arm 10 and a lower arm 11, said arms being counterparts of each other. Each of said arms is provided at its rear with a shoulder 12 adapted to engage the rear side of a rear follower, said shoulders 12 being braced by vertical webs 13. At their front ends, the arms 10-11 are each provided with a trans versely extending shoulder 14 which engages and cooperates with the usual upper and lower shoulders 15 provided on the draw bar 16. As shown in Fig. 1, the upper arm 10 is provided with a downwardly extending flange 17 which fits over the side of the draw bar, which flange at its lower forward end has cast preferably integral therewith an inwardly extending key or lug 18, the lug 18 at its inner end having an elongated head or flange 19 which, when the parts are as shown in Fig. 1, extends at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the in of he o pl r k y sl t 2 At the opposite side of the draw bar, the yoke arm 10 is provided with a short depending triangular shaped flange 21 and a slight clearance 22 is provided between the upper wall of the draw bar shank and the adjacent portion of the yoke arm. As heretofore stated, the yoke arms 10 and 11 are counterparts and, as will be understood, the corresponding flange 17 of the lower member 11 is on the opposite side of the draw bar shank to that on which the flange 17 of the upper member 10' is found and similarly with the shorter side flanges 21. The enlarged heads 1919 on the inner ends of the lugs or keys 18 overlap the inner edges 23 of the walls which surround the coupler key slot in the draw bar shank. I If desired, each of the members 10 and 11 at its rear end may be provided with a rearwardly extended perforated ear 24 so that the members may be de tachably connected as by means of a bolt 25.
The parts are shown in operative position in Fig. 1 and to disassemble the yoke the bolt 25 is first removed, after which the arms 10 and 11 are swung upwardly and downwardly respectively, as indicated by the arrows at and 6, until they reach the position where the elongated heads 19-19 on the inner ends of the keys become parallel with the slot 20. In this position, it will be observed that the short flanges 21-2l have cleared the draw bar and the keys 1818 may be withdrawn laterally from the draw bar. In assembling the yokethe reverse of the above described steps is employed.
The improved yoke provides a detachable connection with the draw bar, one which may be cheaply manufactured and readily applied to the draw bar.
Although I have herein shown and described a specific form of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the exact construction shown.
I claim 1. A yoke for railway draft rigging comprising two members, each of which has a laterally extending stud at its front end, each stud having an elongated head at its inner end, the heads being adapted to enter a coupler key slot when parallel with the latter and prevented from removal therefrom when positioned at an angle thereto.
2. A yoke for railway draft riggings which comprises upper and lower horizontal, separable arms, each of which is provided with integral means at its forward end vadapted to enter a coupler key slot.
3. A yoke of the character described comprising two members, each having an inwardly extending key at its front 6nd pro vided with an elongated head at its inner end, said elongated heads on the keys being arranged to form a bayonet joint with the draw bar coupler key slot, said members having also shoulders at the rear ends adapted to engage a rear follower.
4. A yoke of the character described c0mprising two like members, each having two side wings at the front thereof, one wing being longer than the other and the longer wing having an inwardly extending lug arranged to enter a coupler key slot.
5. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with a draw bar having a key slot therein and provided with upper and lower shoulders, of a yoke consisting of two like members, each of which is provided with a shoulder arranged to engage one of said draw bar shoulders, each of said members being provided also with a side wing having an inwardly extending lug arranged to enter said slot in the draw bar, each of said lugs having an elongated head at the inner end thereof.
6. A yoke for railway draft riggings comprising two like members, each of which is provided with integral means for efiecting a bayonet slot attachment with a slotted draw bar, each of said members having also rearwardly extended, perforated ears, and a bolt for detachably connecting said ears.
7. In a draft device, the combination of a coupler shank having an undercut shoulder,
a yoke composed of two halves provided at one end with a hook adapted to engage the undercut shoulder of the draw bar, and
"means for uniting the two halves of said yoke, the arrangement being such that the hooks cannot be disengaged from said draw bar when the two halves are united, substan tial-ly as described. v
I ALFRED COPONY.
