Description

A. R. SPAULDING.
Metallic Cou nter for. Boots and Shoes.
No.124,094. Patented Feb.27,1872.
ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALMOND R. SPAULDING, OF CLINTON, MAINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,094, dated February 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALMOND RILEY SPAULD- ING, of Clinton, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Counter for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to strengthen the heels of boots and shoes, and thereby prevent them t'rom running down at the heel 5 and it consists in inserting between the outer leather counter and the lining in the heel or back portion of the boot or shoe a metallic counter curved to fit the heel, and otherwise constructed substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of my improved metallic counter.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the counter, which is made of thin steel or of some other suitable metal. It is bent or curved to fit the size of the back end of the boot or shoe, so as to surround the back portion of the heel. B represents teeth formed on the lower edge of the counter, which are turned up so as to enter the under side of the insole of the boot or shoe, and thereby be made selt fastening. The upper edge of the counter is slotted, as seen at C, so as to render it elastic. This metallic counter is placed between the outer leather counter and the lining of the boot or shoe, thus stifiening and effectually preventing the heel from running over or one side. The advantage of this improvement will be readily understood and appreciated by all.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The metallic counter A, provided with slots and teeth B, substantially as shown and described.
ALMOND RILEY SPAULDING.
