MOVING-PICTURE MACHINE.
Application filed December 17, 1914, Serial No. 877,828.
To all whom it may concern:
3e 1t known that I, HERMAN E. Rors, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Man hattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Moving-Picture Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to moving picture machines and has reference more particularly to means for automatically reventing the rays of the projecting lamp rom striking the film when the progressing movement of the film is arrested for any cause or when the film is to be inspected within the machine. An object of the invention is to obtain the above result by a specially designed housing which incloses the film-progressing mechanism and which carries the project ing lamp. A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong, convenient and inexpensive housing which will afford easy access for inspection of the film therein and the mechanism for progressing the same.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed. In the accom anying drawings, forming part of the applihation, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and

Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it must be clearly understood that although the housing herein described is mainly intended for movingpicture machines of the portable, seml-professional type, the same can be used with the regular professional type of moving picture machines.

progressing mechanism consists of three relatively movable sections 5, 6 and 7, section 5 being the main section and comprising the front wall, the top and bottom and a portion of the rear wall which is united to the front wall by a partition 8 extending from the top to the bottom and dividing said housing into two compartments 9 and 10. The section 6 of the housin consists of a side wall and the other portion of the rear wall hinged at 11 to the first portion of the rear wall which forms part of the main section 5. The said section 6 controls the access to the compartment 9. The section 7 of the housing is the other side wall which is hinged at 12 to the rear portion of the wall forming part of the main section 5 and controls the access to the compartment 10. The compartment 9 accommodates the film progressing mechanism, and the compartment 10, the transmission means for actuating the mechanism.
The portion of the rear housing wall forming part of the section 6 is rovided with a light gate 13 which is in a inement witha projecting lamp 14 secured in any suitable way to said section 6. In alinement with the light gate is a film guide 15 and a light passage 16 secured to the front wall of the main section 5. In alinement with the light passage and secured to the outer side of the main section 5 is an objective 17 in front of which is mounted the customary shutter 18 which is actuated by means of the transmission mechanism located in compartment 10.
ll hen for any reason it is desirable to inspect the film 19, the section 6 of the housing is moved on its hinges; consequently, the projecting lamp 14 is moved therewith and the rays of light from the projectin lamp are prevented from falling on to the film, as can be easily seen in Fig. 3. The reason for providing the partition 8 so as to sub-divide the casing into two compartments is to afford inspection of the transmission mechanism without moving the projecting lamp and, consequently, without the interruption of the picture projection, and, further permitting the inspection of the transmission mechanism without in any way exposing the progressing film to the surrounding lights, thus eliminating any danger of fire.
The film progressing mechanism is actuated by a. universal electric motor 20 located at any suitable place, preferably on the base or support 21 carrying the housing. lhe projecting lamp has an electric-light source which is in parallel connection with the motor, as indicated in Fig. 4, and both controlled by the same switch 22, whereby whenever the projection of the film is interrupted by the arrest of the motor '20 the light in the projecting lamp is simultaneously cut off; consequently, no light can fall on the film facing the light gate 13.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantage of the construction and operation of the device shown will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains; and while I have described the principle of operation, together. with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a moving picture machine, a housing for a film-progressing mechanism comprising two relatively movable sections, a projecting lamp associated with one of the sections and adapted to participate in its movement, a'film progressing mechanism in the other section, and means for actuating said film-progressing mechanism.
2. -In a moving-picture machine, a housing comprising two hinged sections, one of the sections consisting of a side and rear wall, a projecting lamp associated with the rear wall of the said section and adapted to participate in its movement, a film-progressing mechanism in the other section, and means for actuating the film-progressing mechanism.
3. In a moving-picture machine, a housing comprising three relatively movable sections, the main sections comprising the front wall, top and bottom'and a portion of the rear wall, a partition from the top to the bottom uniting the rear wall to the front wall, the second section comprising a side wall and the remaining part of the rear wall hinged to the main section at the rear-wall portion thereof. the third sect on comprising a side wall hinged to the main section at the rear thereof, and a projecting lamp associated with the second section and adapted to participate in the movement thereof.
4. In a moving picture machine, a housing comprising two compartments, a film-progressing mechanism in one of the compart- Copies of being adapted to participate in all ments, a transmission mechanism in the other compartment, a motorfor actuating said mechanism, said housing having means whereby independent access may be had to said compartments, and a projecting lamp associated with the means giving access to the compartment accommodating the filmprogressing mechanism, said projecting lamp the movements of said access-giving means, whereby the light from the projecting lamp is prevented from falling on to the film in the film propelling mechanism when access is had to said compartment accommodating said film-propelling mechanism.
5. In a moving-picture machine, a housing for the film-progressing mechanism comprising 'two relatively movable sections, and a projecting lamp secured to one of said sections and adapted to participate with all of the movements thereof, said second section including means whereby the transmission part of said film progressing mechanism may be inspected without the displacement of said section carrying the lamp.
6. In a moving picture machine, a housing comprising three relatively movable sections, one of said sections forming the side of the housing, the other of said sections forming another side and a rear wall of the housing, and a lamp housing secured to the rear wall of said second section so that the same is adapted to participate in all movements of said second section.
7. In a moving picture machine, a housing comprising three relatively movable sections, one of said sections consisting of a side wall, the other of said sections consisting of the other side wall and a portion of the rear wall; and a projecting lamp associated with the rear wall of said second section so that the same is adapted to participate in all the movements of said second section.
8. In a moving picture machine, a housing having a longitudinal partition therein dividing the same into two independent compartments, said housing having means giving independent access to said compartments, and a projecting lamp associated with the access giving means to one of said compartments so that the said lamp will participate in all the movements of said access giving means substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
