IINTTEB STATES PATENT QFFTCF.
ALBERT H. HAWKES, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
ARC-LIGHT DIFFUSER.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. HAWKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arc-Light Ditfusers, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved diffuser for cutting od light for arc lamps.
In the use of arc lamps in theaters and elsewhere it is often necessary to shut off the light. To turn off the current is not sufficientfor the glow of the carbons lasts an appreciable time whether the lamp is used as an ordinary stage illuminating means or for stereopticon use.
According to this invention, I provide a pair of shutter slides, having together a combined diamond opening by preference, which slides will approach a line drawn between the arc and the center of the lens. The slides are preferably formed so as to be parallel with the lens. Suitable mechanism is provided for operating the slides.
The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a sectional side elevation of arc containing boxes provided with my improved invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of the slide mechanism without the outer boX. Fig. 3 is a partial section taken on line 3 3 Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, 1 is a boX or container for the arc mechanism provided with a lens 3. Within the` boX 2 a casing or frame 3' is provided, in which is mounted a frame 4 carrying the carbons 5 and 6. The frame 4 and the carbons' are diagrammatically represented in the drawings. An aperture 7 in the front plate 8 is provided in line with the arc and the center of the lens, and on the plate 8 are vertical guide strips 9, in which are mounted slides 10 and 11 overlapping one another, and provided Specification of Letters Patent.

each wit-h an angular opening, so that the two slides or shutters 10-11 may occupy a position in Fig. 2 entirely free and clear of the opening 7, but may be advanced toward each other to produce a diamond or square shaped opening within the area of the opening 7 until the two slides are advanced to such a degree that all light will be shut off from the boX. In order to advance the shutters simultaneously I provide on each shutter a threaded lug 12, into which a right and left threaded screw 13 is adjusted. A bearing 14 is provided for the screw at the top of the boX in this instance, and a beveled gear 15 secured fast on the screw. A beveled gear 16 at the end of an operating rod 17, which is provided with a handle 18 outside of the boX, is adapted for control by the operator to move the shutters toward and from each other. In order to keep the light at all times through the center of the lens from the arc I provide that the shutters shall move` on a line parallel with the lens, although the arc carbons in work of this character are placed on an oblique line for reasons well known in the profession,
I claim as my invention:
The herein described arc light dilfuser consisting of a source of light and a light proof containing box therefor provided with an aperture, a lens provided exterior to said box, a pair of shutters adapted to collectively pass between the arc and the lens, and means for moving them toward and away from each other, said mechanism consisting of a handle and threaded connections between the handle and the shutters, said mechanism beingmounted upon the inclosing boX.
Signed at New York city, New York, this 21st day of October 1910.
ALBERT H. IIAWKES.
