To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STACY Bl HASELTINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Means of Connecting Draw-Bar to Draft-Yoke in Railway Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means of connecting the drawbar to the draft yoke in railway draft rigging.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient means of connecting the drawbar and draft yoke in railway draft rigging, and one in which the drawbar and draft yoke may be easily connected and disconnected.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the forward end of a draft yoke and the rear end of the drawbar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, vertical section on line 3, 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 4, 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a block. Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive illustrate a modification; Fig. 6 being a side elevation, Fig. 7 a par'ial section on line 77 of Fig. 6, Fig. 8 a longitudinal vertical section on line 8-8 of Fig. 7, Fig. 9, a cross-section on line 9-9 of Fig. 6, and Fig. 10 a perspective view of ablock.
Referring to the drawings, 11 reperesents the shank of a draw bar of usual construction, 12 the butt of the draw bar, 13 a draft oke, the forward portion of which is shown 1n drawing, 14 the upper strap and '15 the lower strap thereof. The draw bar is pro vided with the upper and lower transverse shoulders 16 and 17 respectively. The upper strap 14 of the yoke is forwardly provided with a downwardly turned gib 18, engaging the upper shoulder 16 of the draw bar. Substantially at a point in line with the rear face 19 of the butt of the draw bar, the lower strap 15 of yoke 13 has a downward turn 20, in front of which the lower strap is forwardly extended in a plane substantially parallel with the opposite portion of the upper strap and a suflicient distance therefrom to permit the butt of the draw bar to clear the gib 18, in inserting it through the forward opening of the yoke. The upper and lower straps of the yoke are forwardly joined by the lateral webs or plates 21, 21, thus giving the yoke a head with the box-like opening 22 formed between the webs and the yoke straps.v The webs or plates 21, 21 are each provided near their lower portions with the L-shaped slot 23 to receive the transverse L-shaped block 24. The block 24 has an upright member 25 and a flat member 26, having the shoulder 27 against which the lower shoulder 17 of the butt 12 of the draw-bar engages in normal position with the draft rigging. The block 24 extends at its ends beyond the outer edges of the plates 21, 21 and is provided with the perforations 28, 28 to receive the keys 29, 29 which hold it against accidental displacement. The top face 30 of the member 26 75 of the block 24, when within the slots 23, 23 is substantially even with the portion of the inner or upper face 31 of the lower yoke strap 13 back of the bend 20 therein. In the modification illustrated in Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive the draw-bar shank 32 and the butt thereof 33 are provided with the usual upper and lower transverse shoulders 34 and 35 respectively; the draft yoke 36, the forward end of which is shown in the drawing, has an upper strap 37 and a lower strap 38; the upper strap 37 being provided with a downwardly turned gib 53 engaging the upper shoulder 34 of the draw-bar. The lower strap 38 is provided with the downward turn or bend 39, in front of which it is forwardly extended in a plane parallel with the opposite portion of the upper strap and a sufiicient distance therefrom to permit the butt of the draw-bar to clear the gib 38 in inserting the draw-bar through the forward opening of the yoke. The upper and lower straps of the yoke are forwardly joined by the lateral webs or plates 40, 40, thus roviding a head for the yoke with the box-like opening 100 41 into which the draw-bar is received. The webs 40, 40 are transversely provided near their lower edges with the slot 42 to receive the transverse key 43, which passes therethrough and through the transverse perfora- 105 tion 44 in the L-shaped block 45. The block 45 has an upright member 46 and a flat member 47, forming the shoulder 48, against which the lower shoulder 35 of the butt of the draw-bar engages in normal position 110 I with'the draft rigging. lhe top face 49 of portion orupper face 50 of the lower yoke strap 38, back of the bend 39 therein. key 43 is provided with the perforations 51 51 at its ends to receive the cotters or pins 52 52.
The operation of my device will be clear. To remove the drawbar, the block is withdrawn, permitting the butt of the draw-bar to be moved downwardly so that the upper shoulder thereof may clear the gib of the upper yoke strap and be forwardly withdrawn. To connect the draw-bar with the Y yoke, the butt of the draw-bar is inserted in the box-like opening of the member of the yoke, lifted to position so that the upper shoulder of the draw-bar engages the g'ib in the upper strap of the yoke and then the block is secured in the lower portion of the said'opening so that the shoulder thereon engages the lower shoulder of the draw-bar and the block is then secured in position in the preferred form by inserting the pins in the ends thereof and in the modified form by passing the key therethrough. It will be seen that on the rearward movement of the draw-bar, the butt of the same will engage directly with the followers or compression resisting members within the yoke and without strain upon the yoke, that is, the draw bar is free to move rearwardly independently of the yoke, while on the forward movement of the draw-bar the shoulders of the same will be in engagement with the shoulders provided. on the upper strap of the yoke and upon the block, v
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a draw bar having a butt forming oppositely disposed shoulders, a yoke forwardly provided with a laterally slotted box-like head.v

the upper strap being forwardly provided with a transverse shoulder adapted to en-- gage one of the shoulders of the draw bar and the lower strap having a depressed ortion therein adapted to receive a bloc a block, the latter being provided with a shoulderadapted to engage another'shoulder ofthe draw bar, and means for securing said block in said depressed portion of the yoke, the draw bar being held in said head by said shoulders and being free to move rearwardly independently of the yoke.
4. In a device of the class described, a draw bar provided with shoulders, a yoke forwardly provided with a hollow box-like head to receive the draw bar, a transversev shoulder within said head adapted to engage one shoulder of the draw bar, and a removable block provided with a shoulder adapted to engage the other shoulder of said draw bar, the said head being provided with lateral slots to receive said block, the hollow portion of the yoke head extending below the plane of the inner lower face of the lower strap of the yoke, the said draw bar being held within the yoke and free to move rearwardly therein independently of the yoke.
5. In a draft rigging for railway cars, a draw bar having oppositely disposed shoul ders, a yokeforwardly provided with a laterally slotted hollow head to receive the draw bar, a shoulder within said head coacting with one of the shoulders of the draw bar, a block passing through theslots in the yoke head having a shoulder co-acting with. the other shoulder of the draw bar, said draw bar being free to move rearwardly independently of the yoke.
6. As an article of manufacture, a yoke for railway draft rigging, said yoke comprising spaced, parallel arms and a hollow box-like head uniting the forward ends thereof, the upper wall of said head being freeto move rearwardly therein indeprovided with a transversely extending gib on its inner face adapted to cooperate w1th the upper shoulder of a' standard draw bar the lower face of the butt when the latter is in operative position to thereby support the butt in elevated position with the upper shoulder thereof in alinement with said gib.
7 In combination, a yoke member comprising strap portions, sides formed integrally with the forward ends of said strap portions and extending therebetween to form a hooded forward end, one of said strap portions being depressed and offset at its forward end to permit insertion therein of a coupler butt, and a key member extending through said sides and arranged to prevent withdrawal of said coupler butt from assembled position, said key member being provided with a bearing portion for said 0011- pler butt, said portion being of thickness corresponding to the depression of said strap portion, said key member being. further provided with a. shoulder to coact with said coupler butt to prevent its withdrawal from said yoke, the other of said strap portions being shouldered to coact with said key member to prevent such withdrawal of said coupler butt. v
8. As an article of manufacture, a railway draft rigging yoke adapted for detachable connection with a standard draw bar, said yoke comprising parallel arms united at their forward ends by .a hollow box-like head, one of the walls of said head being provided with means on its inner face adapt ed to cooperate with one shoulder of a standard draw bar butt, the opposite wall of said head being spaced vertically from said means sufiiciently to permit the insertion, by longitudinal movement, of the butt within the head, means associated with said head said last named shoulder between the adjacent horizontal face of the butt and said last named wall of the head to thereby maintain the butt in operative position with said first named means.
i 9, As an article of manufacture, a railway draft rigging yoke adapted for detachable connection with a standard shouldered draw bar, said yoke comprising a U-shaped loop portion and a hollow box-like head at the front ends of the arms of the loop portion, the upper wall of said head being provided on its inner face with a transverse gib adapted to engage the upper shoulder of the draw bar butt under draft, the lower wall ofsaid head being spaced below said gib sufliciently to permit the insertion of the draw bar butt within thev head by relative longitudinal movement, and removable means associated with said head, said means being adapted to be positioned underneath the lower face of the draw bar butt to thereby support the latter in elevated cooperative engagement with said gib, said means being supported by said head, and said lower wall of the head being adapted to support the butt end of the draw bar when said means are removed.
