To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JO N KUNsT, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rollomobiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy popularly known as a rollomobile.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, substantial and practical toy of this class which can be readily manufactured at small expense.
A further object is to design the individual parts of the device so that they may be readily and correctly assembled by inexperienced hands, to the end that they may be sold in a knock down condition and may be assembled even by the children who are to use them.
A further and more detailed object is to provide a device comprising a platform member and a steering member and to provide metallic parts connectedto these members designed to afford a simple pivotal connection between the members, and to provide a simple and very substantial means whereby the metallic parts are connected to the members. i
Other objects and-aims of the invention,
more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims. Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary view of a portion of the steering member illustrating description of the parts illustrated the reference character L indicates the platform member and G the steering member. A pair of rollers or wheels H are secured, one to the rear end of the platform member. and one to the lower end of the steering member as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. The ends of the respective members are forked so as to provide slots or pockets 1 therein within which the rollers are received. Suitable bolts 2 extend through the forked ends of the members and serve as bearing shafts for the rollers. These bolts obviously also serve to strengthen the forked ends of the members in that they cause said ends to reinforce each other when strains are applied thereto.
In order to connect the members together a pair of metallic parts 3 andfi are employed, the part 3 being connected to the platform member at the forward end thereof and the part l'being connected to the steering member at a point above the wheel H carried thereby. .The part 3 is provided with bolt receiving apertures 5 in its upper end, the part 4 is provided'with lugs 6 formed with apertures mating the apertures 5 in the part 3 and a pivot rod or bolt 7 extends through all the mating apertures and serves to pivotally connect the parts 3 and 4 together. Any means, as the'cotter pin 8, may be employed for retaining the pivot bolt against detachment. The mating apertures in the parts 3 and 4 are preferably arranged so as to hold the pivot bolt in a position inclined. from the vertical so that while the platform member L'is maintained in a horizontal position, the steering member G is retained in an inclined position so that its upper end inclines rearwardly. This not only improves the appearance "of the device but has a desirable effect in the steering operation as is now well understood in connection with devices of this kind.
The upper end of the steering member is provided with a suitable handle 9.
The part 3.may be connected to the plat,- form member in any suitable manner, but the same is preferably formed with a central web 10 and opposite flangesll. The
forward end of the platform member is forked so as to provide a slot 12 of such a width as to snugly receive the web 10. The flanges 11 engage upon the upper and lower surfaces of the platform member adjacent the slot 12 and serve, with the web 10, to define pockets at opposite sides'of the web into which the adj acent portions of the platform member closely fit. The web 10 isformed with an aperture 13 and a bolt 14 extends through the forks of the platform member and through said aperture and serves the treble purpose of positively retaining the web against longitudinal movement out of the slot 12, retalning the forks of the platform member clamped tightly into the pockets formed by the flanges 11, and reinforcing the material of the platform member.
By this means of attachment it will be seen that it is absolutely impossible for the part 3 to become detached or work loose from the platform member so long as the bolt 14 is in place. At the same time the connection is made an operation which canbe readily effected by the most lnexperlenced 9 5 hand.
In order to connect the part 4 with the steering member the slot 1 of the steering member is a extended upwardly above the oint required by the presence of the wheel E1 therein and is adapted to receive a web 15 formed on the part 4:, the upwardly extended portion of the slot 1 being reduced in width so as to fit closely against the opposite sides of the web 15. The art A is :provided with opposite flanges 16 or engaging against the front and rear surfaces of the steering member and for cooperating with the web 15 to define pockets at o posite sides of the web' into which the orks of the steering member snugly fit. As many changes could be made in'this construction without departing from the scope of the'following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described, compris ing a platform member and a steering member, one end of one .of said members being provided with forks, a wheel rotatably supported between the forks of said member, and means pivotally connecting said members together comprising in part a member having a web portion extending between the forks of said forked member and having opposite flanges engaging opposite'surface portions of the forks.
2-. A device of the class described, comprising a platform member and a steering member, one end of one of said members'being forked, means for connecting said members together comprising a part having oppositely disposed pockets therein into which the forks of said forked member engage, and means retaining the forks of said forked member within said pockets.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a platform member and a steering member, means connecting said members together comprising. a member having oppositely disposed pockets therein, one of said first mentioned members having oppositely disposed parts for engaging within said pockets, and clamping means for clamping said parts in said pockets. 7
4. A device of the class described comprising, a' substantially horizontally disposed platform member, a steering member substantially vertically disposed at the forward end of said platform member, said ward face, and means'pivotally connecting said members together comprising in part an element extending through said slot from the rear surface of said steering member to the forward surface of said steering member,-
a flange formed upon said element disposed to fit snugly against the forward face of sald steering member, and means for retaining said element in position with said flange of said steering member.
5. A device of the class described, comfitting snugly against the forward surface prising a substantially horizontally disposed steering member having a slot extending therethrough from its rear face to its fora tion extending through said slot, said portion having a flange formed thereon disposed to fit snugly against the outer face of said slotted member, and means for posi tively retaining said portion in position with engage, and a clamp bolt extending between said forks for clamping said forks within said pockets.
7. A device of the class described, comprising a platform member and a steering memher, one end of one of said members being forked, connecting means for connecting said members together comprising a part having oppositely disposed pockets therein into which the forks of said forked member engage, said connecting means having a dividing wall arranged between said pockets, and

said dividing wall being formed with an aperture therethrough opening into said pockets, and a clamp bolt extending through said aperture and engaging the forks of said forked member to clamp said forks rigidly within said pockets.
8. A device of the class described, comprising a platform member and a steering member, the steering member comprising a piece of board having a slot cut into one end thereof forming a pair of forks integral with said steering member, a wheel arranged within said slot between said forks, a bolt extending from one fork to the other bridging said slot to form an axle member upon which the wheel is rotatably mounted, and means for connecting said platform member and steering member together comprising in part a member also fixed within the slot of said steering member.
