2 SHEETS H T 2- NITED s'r rEs rATENT oFFIoEf" EMIL KESSLER, or BnooxLYN, NEW YORK.
' SHEET-METAL TOY.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EMIL KEssLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings a'ndState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal T0ys,;
Fig. 5, and there is a U-shaped clip 22 providedwith a squaredropening 24 (see Fig. 4), which slips on to the squared end of the lshaft, at the inner side of each rear wheel.
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet metal toys, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a novel-means for connecting the wheels of such toy to the axles or the like. Other "objects and aims of the invention, more or less-broad than those stated above,
' together with the advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in thecourse of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts, and applications .of
- principles constituting the invention; and
the scope of protection contemplated will.
appear from the claims.
- In the accompanying drawings, which are to betaken as'a part of this specification, and in which I have shown a merely preferred form of embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation: of a; toy
embodying. the invention; *Fig. 2 is a rear.
elevation of the same with parts removed and parts broken away; Fig. 81i's1a partial top plan view with certain of the parts-re moved; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the means for fastening the wheel to the axle; Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of another form of toy embodying the invention; Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the same; and, Fig. 8 is an enlarged side elevation of the drive wheel and connected parts.
Referring to the numerals on the draw ings and particularly Figs. 1, 2 and 3, which show my invention as embodied in a toy hand car or the like, the numeral 9 indicates the platform of the device having integral depending lugs 10 bent down at the sides" to support the axles and having also an upstanding lug 11 punched out from the platform. axle to which are secured the wheels 14. The rear or driving axle is in the form of a crank shaft 15 to which is pivotally connected a link 16, the other end of whichis pivotally connected as at 17 to a lever 18, the latter being pivoted on the lug 11. In the form.
shown in Fig. 1 the platfo is provided Specification ofLetters-Patent. Application filed January 8,1916. Serial No. 70,909.
The numeral 12 indicates the front Patented Sept. 3,1918.
withia seat19, on which is placed an effigy 20 connected to the lever 18 as indicated by the numeral '21, so that as the lever 18 oscillatestherewi'll be a corresponding movement of-the efligy. ;Each end of the crank shaft 15 has a squared portion as indicated in.
After these clips are inposition on theshaft (and by the way they may be straight when they areslipped on andabent into the U- sha'pe afterward, the wheels are slid on over the ends of the shaft, and then the extreme of the wheel, and the ,clipis designed to between'the wheel and'the shaft is not of importance, and the aperture through the .liubl portion of the wheel may be considerably oversize. .In. Figs. 6, 7 and S-thesame form of clip i shown applied to a toy ve- I locipede. The drive' wheel is shown at 30 and passing through the hub portion thereof is a onepiece crank shaft 31, having also integral pedal portions 32. The fork is made in two parts 34 and 35, one leg on each side of the wheel. In assembling, the crank shaft 31 is first inserted through the hub portion of the wheel, the aperture in which may be considerably oversized to permit of this operation'. Next, the clips 22 are positioned on the crank shaft, one on each side of the wheel, and preferably at right angles to each other, as shown in Fig. 8, with their ends taking between the spokesof the wheel, and with squared or non-circular apertures of the clips engaged over correspondingly formed portions of the crank shaft so that the clips and therefore the wheel will turn with the shaft. Next, the two parts of the fork, 34 and 35, are separately slid over the ends of the crank shaft to the Fig. .7 position, and then secured together at their upper ends, or to the frame of the velocipede, as indicated-at 36. This is a simple and.
ends of the. shaft areflattened asindicated 1 at 25' to prevent lateral movement of the :wheels. Theends of the U-shaped member v22 are bentsoas to take between the spokes of the main portion and pedal portions exl tending at right angles from the hangers. In positioning a wheel on this crank shaft the wheel is slipped over one of the pedal portions, past the bend between the pedal portion and the hanger and then past the bend between the hanger and the main p0r-' tion of the shaft so that it takes its final position on the main portion of the shaft, and would be free torotate thereon except for the provision ofthe clips. In the same way the clips and the parts of the fork are brought to position, one at a time, the
squared or non-circular portions ofthe clips engaging the correspondingly shaped portions of the main portions of the shaft, so that the clips and therefore the wheel which they engage, willvrotate with the shaft, and the parts of the fork in each case coming outside of the clips.
Inasmuch as many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made without departing and all statements of the scope of the invention' which, as a matterof language, might be said to fall therebetween.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described, a shaft having a non-circular portion, a wheel rotatable with the shaft, and a U-shaped clip having a non-circular aperture corresponding with the non-circular portion of the shaft and having its ends engaging the wheel.
2. In a device of the kind described, a crank shaft extending through and at opposite sides of a .wheel a pair of clips on the crank shaft, and rotating therewith one at each side of the wheel and having their ends engaging the wheel, said. clips being dis- -posed1at right angles to each other. I
4. In a device of the kind described, a crank shaft extending through and at oppo- -sitesides of a wheel, a pair of clips on the crank shaft, and rotating therewith one at each side of the wheel and having their ends engaging the wheel, and a two-piece fork,
one part on each side of the wheel, and out side of the clips respectively.
5. In a device of the kind described, a shaft,a Wheel onthe shaft and a clip fixed on the'shaft for rotation'therewith and having a portion engaging'the wheel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL KESSLER.
