A TTOR/VEYS ALFRED Z. BAKER, 0F LEONIA, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOE TO ILLUSTRATED POSTAL CARD AND NOVELTY COMPANY, OF NEVI YORK, N. 'Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1916.
Application filed October 28, 1915. Serial No. 58,436.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED Z. BAKER, a citizen'of the United States, and a resident of Leonia, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and Im proved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a toy vehicle the entire body of which is formed of a foldable blank.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive toy which can be easily and quickly folded into a predetermined vehicle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wheeled vehicle which is propelled through the medium of an elastic member adapted to be wound on an axle.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the toy vehicle; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the entire body of the vehicle is made; Fig. 4. is a plan view of the strips forming' the running boards for the vehicle; and Fig. 5 is a plan View of the disks.
Referring to the drawings, the blank shown in Fig. 3 is cut out of any suitable material which can be easily folded. The longitudinal portion or panel 6, bordered by the lines ab-ccZ forms the bottom of the vehicle. It is bordered on each'side by a longitudinal portion or panel 7 and 8, forming the sides of the vehicle, the portion 7 being foldable on line acZ and the portion 8, on the line 5-0. Extending longitudinally from thepanel 6 are end portions orpanels 9 and '10 respectively, the portion 9 forming the front panel of the vehicle and foldable on line ccZ, the portion 10 forming the rear panel and foldable on line a-b. The longitudinal panel 8 is provided with laterally extending panel portions 11 and 12 foldable longitudinally on lines 6 7 and gh respectively. The lateral panel 11 is adapted to bind the side panels 7 and 8 to the end panel 10 and form the seat compartments of the vehicle. The panel 12 is also adapted to bind the side" panels 7 and 8 to the front panel 9 to form the engine portion of the vehicle The lateral panel 11 has a cut-out 13 whereby a seat portion 1 1 is formedsimilar to the seatportion 15 provided at the end of the extension 11 adto form the wind shield. The lateral portion 12 is also foldable longitudinally on l1nes'gr, qs and Q'l/. The front panel 9 of the vehicle presents two substantially circular corner portions 19 which take the place of the head lights. It has also a semicircular portion 20 between the portions 19 adapted to engage a slot 20 provided in the lateral panel section 12. It has also side portions 21 foldable on lines c-0 and d-cl and adapted to fit between" the side panels 7 and 8. The rear panellO has also side portions 21 foldable on lines b b and aa, also adapted to fit between the sidepanels 7 and 8. It has a central semi-circular tongue 22 for engaging a slot 22" in the lateral panel 11. The portion 16 of the lateral panel 11 has side tongues 28 and 21 for'engaging slots 23 and "24" respectively in the side panels 8 and 7 respectively. The seat section 14 of the panel '11 has the corner tongues 25 and 26 for engaging slots 25'jand .26 in the side panels 8 and 7'respectively and the portion '17. The seat portion 15 has also corner tongues 27 and 28 for engaging slots 27 and 28 in the side panels 8 and7 respectively.
. The portion 17 0f the lateral panel 11 has slot 30 in the side panel 7. The engagement of the tongues 29 and 30 with their re axles are angular so that a disk 34 forming a wheelengaging the end is constrained to revolve with the axle. The disk 34 has foldable portions where it engages the axle so as to increase the bearing surface of the diskon the axle. The side panels 7 and 8 are provided with slots 36, 37 and 38 adjacent their folding lines for receiving tongues 36, T37 and 38 of corresponding strips 39 adapted to represent the mud guards of the vehicle. The strips 39 are foldable on lines u, the end portions being provided with angular tongues 40 of which one is adapted to engage the slot 25 or 26 according to which side the mud guard is to be placed, and the other to engage the slots 40 provided in the side panel 8 and the lateral extension 12. A cut-out 41 is provided in the side panel 7 to cooperate with the slot 40 of the lateral extension 12.
The folded vehicle is propelled through the medium of an elastic member 42, one end of which is secured to the rear axle 32 and the other end, preferably, to the front panel 9. The circular portions 19 and 20 of the front prevent the front from collapsing when the member 42 is stressed; A circular opening 4-3 is provided in the bottom panel 6 at the rear thereof to facilitate the engagement of the end of the elastic mem ber 42 with the rear axle. A circular disk 44, resulting from the cutout 43, is used as a steering wheel for the vehicle. It is mounted on a stem 45 which is engaged by a portion 46 of the blank and also by an opening 47 provided in the bottom panel 6. The portion 46 forms part of the side panel 8 and is foldable on the transverse line og.
To shape the blank into the vehicle, all parts thereof being foldable away on the lines indicated with the exception of the parts foldable on the lines 7cZ,' n 0 and g-g, which are foldable in the opposite direction, the tongues or lugs are engaged in the corresponding slots with the angularly disposed tongues 29 and 30 looking the folded blank and preventing the disengagement of the interengaging parts. The axles are then passed through the corresponding openings 31 and the wheels 34 thrust upon the angular ends 33, the flaps 35 in the center of the wheel gripping the angular end of the axle. The elastic member 42 is then secured, as previously stated, and by winding the rear'wheel in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figs. 1 and 2 and holding the wheels to prevent loss of power, the same may be caused to roll through a distance of from twenty-five to thirty-five feet if placed on a smootlrfloor. It is self-evident that the distance moved depends on the tension given to .the flexible member and on the smoothness of the floor on which the vehicle is placed to run.
