' Be it known that I, JACOB BAUM, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements lin Combination-Locks, of 'which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locks; and its object is to facilitate and render more secure the fastening of the inner disks in the tumbler wheels, and to simplify the construction ofthe` inner disks and otherparts of the lock. Y My invention consists in the combination of parts and in the details of construction and arrangement of parts as will herein be more fully described and claimed.

The back plate 1, has, projecting forwardly into the lock, the hollow stud 2 upon which stud the tumbler wheels 3 are rotatably mounted `with washers 4 interposed between them, and with a washer 5 interposed between them and the back 'plate 1. The washers 4 have lugs 6 projecting into a longitudinal keyway 7 on the exterior of the hollow stud 2. Near its forward end, the hollow stud 2 has an annular groove 8,

The back plate 1 is made up of a forward section 1 and a rear section 1 with the hollow stud 2 pressedV forward from the section 1, these sections being made of sheet metal, and the structure thusbeing in two pieces joined together instead of an integral cast structure as commonly used.
The front section ljof the back plate is formed up with its peripheral part consisting of a flat radially extending flange 1"L and an outer or peripheral shell 1b, which joins the hollow stud 2 through an intermediate part 1cr that is pressed backward in the form of an annular channel of substantially semicircular. cross section, whichis of diameter somewhat less than the distance betweenthe Specification of Letters Patent.

The part 1d forms bearing for the washers 5. The outer shell lb forms the bearing for the back plate in the aperture inside of the safe door or lock case into which such locks are itted in a well-known manner, and the iiange la serves to attach the forward section l to the rear section 1, which latter section is merely a disk of sheet metal with its edge l turned forward over the flange 1a and pressed tightly down thereon. Thus the back plate is formed with a radially extending peripheral flange made up of three thicknesses of the sheet metal, and thus of ample thickness to afford the rcquired strength for securing the back plate to the safe door by a fastening means passing through openings 1n in this flange. The hollow stud 2 may haveits keyway 7 and the annular groove 8 pressed in it.
Each tumbler wheel 3 comprises the main outer disk 10 and the inner disk 11 fitting into a central aperture of the main outer disk, the wall of the aperture and the periphery of the inner disk having teeth 12 that mesh and cause the two disks to turn together, but allowing the inner disk to be slipped out and reinserted in as many different positions relative to the outer disk 10 as there are teeth 12. As is well known, it is by this means that the combination of the lock is changed. I simplify the opera tion of changing the combination of the lock, and at the same `time render secure the fastening of the inner disk in the outer disk, by providing` a fastener 13 made of a piece of resilient wire bent into an incomplete circle and sprung into an annular groove 14 formed in a reduced part 15 of the periphery of the inner disk 11 directly to the rear of the teeth 12, exteriorly of the main outer disk 10. The reduced part 15 is of such diameter relative to the diameter of the outer circle of the teeth 12, and the groove 14 is of such depth, that the ring 13 will project out all around and engage with the main outer disk 10 of the tumbler wheel around the rear sides of the teeth of the tumbler wheel andbe easily pried from its groove when desired. Thus the ring may be very strong and unyielding to side thrust of the disks 10 and 11 relative to each other. ,i

In a combination lock, a tumbler wheel comprising an outer disk having a central aperture with abutting means around it, an inner disk adapted to be inserted from one side of said outer disk and bear against the abutting means around the aperture, and having a part extending out of the opposite side of said outer disk, this part of the inner disk having a peripheral groove lying behind the abutting means of the aperture when the inner disk is thus inserted, and a wire bent into substantially the shape of an incomplete circle and sprung into said peripheral groove by spreading over the part of the periphery of said inner disk away from said outer disk, to prevent displacement of said inner disk from said outer disk, but accessible for the purpose of prying it out of said groove when it is desired to displace said inner disk from said outer disk.

In a combination lock, a tumbler wheel comprising an outer disk having a central aperture with a toothed wall, and abutting means around said toothed wall, an inner disk having a toothed periphery to mesh with said toothed wall and being adapted to be inserted from one side of said outer disk and bear against the abutting means around the aperture, and having a part extending out of the opposite side of said outer disk, this part of the inner disk having a peripheral groove lying behind the toothed wall of the aperture when the inner disk is thus inserted, and a wire bent into substantially the shape of an incomplete circle and sprung into said peripheral groove by spreading over the part of the periphery of said inner disk away from said outer disk, to prevent displacement of said inner disk from said outer disk, but accessible for the purpose of prying it out of said groove when it is desired to displace said inner disk from said outer disk.

In a combination lock, a tumbler wheel comprising an outer main part having a central aperture with abutting means around it, and an inner disk inserted into said aperture from one side of said mainpart against the abutting means and having a peripheral groove that lies behind the abutting means when said disk is thus inserted, and a resilient fastening means held in said groove and engaging behind the abutting means to prevent withdrawal of said inner disk from said outer main part, said inner disk having a stationary pressed-up lug formed integral therewith.

In a combination lock, a tumbler wheel comprising an outer main part having a central aperture with abutting means around it, and an inner disk inserted into said apern ture from one side of said main part against the abutting means and having a peripheral groove that lies behind the abutting means when said disk is thus inserted, and a resilient fastening means held in said groove and engaging behind the abutting means to prevent withdrawal of said inner disk from said outer main part, said inner disk having a stationary pressed-up lug formed integral therewith.
9. In a combination lock, a back plate formed of two sections of sheet metal, one of these sections having a hollow stud pressed forward from its center, and being embossed with an outer shell and a radially extending peripheral flange, and the outer section being in the form of a disk with its outer edge turned in over this peripheral flange of the one section, whereby the outer shell of the one section forms a bearing means for the back in the safe door, and whereby the peripheral flange with the outer edge turned thereover becomes a flange for fastening the back plate into the safe door.
