Description

APPLICATION FILED OCT. I8, I916.
Patented Sept. 11, 1917.
ATTORNEY ss' ann OFl@G ALBERT I-I. DE VOE, F WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ORNAMENTAL EDGE-FINISHING SEAM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1917.
Application filed October 18, 1916. Serial No. 126,255.
, citizen of the United States, residing at lVestfield, in the county ofUnion and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Edge-Finishing Seams, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The present improvement relates to ornamental edge-finishing seams for sewed ar-i ticles and has for an object the reorganization of the component parts of the seam disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 119,825, filed September 13, 1916, for
the purpose of producing a seam which is less bulky and which is more highly ornamental in appearance; the lace-strip not being concealed to the same extent as in my prior construction. 7
To these ends the improvement, in its preferred embodiment, comprisesa body-fabric and lace-strip disposed in a common plane with their meeting edges in abutted relation. A stay-strip is disposed beneath the marginal portion of the body-fabric with its outer edge underlapping the inner edge portion of the lace-strip. An embroidery thread is looped back and forth in figure 8 fashion across the abutted edges of the bodyfabric and stay-strip and is secured in position by two spaced lines of stitches, one passing through the lace-strip and the other through the body-fabric. These lines of stitches also pass through the outer'marginal portion of the stay-strip. A third line of stitches serves to secure the inner edge of the stay-strip to the body-fabric.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the front and reverse sides of a body-fabric to which the improved seam has been applied. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view along the line 1-1, Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated, a bodyfabric 1, usually of knitted material, and a lace-strip or edging 2 are arranged in a common plane with the edge 8 of the bodyfabric in abutted relation with the edge 4 of the lace-strip. A stay-strip 5, preferably of woven fabric, the edges of which may be folded inwardly as illustrated, is so disposed beneath the body-fabric that the outer edge portion 6 underlaps the inner edge portion 4: of the edging. A covering or embroidery thread 7 of loose texture is looped back-and-forthpreferably in the well known figure 8 fashion, across the abutted edges 8 and 4; and is secured in position by two spaced rows of single chain-stitches of which the outer row 8 passes through the edging and stay-strip and the inner row 9 through the body-fabric and stay-strip. The inner folded edge-portion 10 of the staystrip 5 is secured to the body-fabric by a third line of single chain-stitches 11, spaced inwardly from. the covering thread 7.
In the present construction the embroidery thread has a peculiar covering and concealing function due to its figure 8 form,
and will be seen to almost completely hide the edge 3 of the body-fabric. lVhen the seam is applied to the raw edge of the bodyfabric the cut threads thereof will be confined and practically concealed by the embroidery thread, thus rendering it unnecessary to fold under the raw edge of the bodyfabric. Any lateral strain applied to the lace-strip will be transmitted through the stitches 8 and 11 to the body-fabric and there will be no tendency for such strain to distort the embroidery thread or cause the stitches 9 to tear through the raw edge of the body-fabric. By abutting the meeting edges of the body-fabric and lace-strip the resultant seam is of minimum thickness and the ornamental lace-strip or edging is more fully exposed to view.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 2- 1. An ornamental edge-finishing seam for sewed articles comprising, a body-fabric presenting an edge, an ornamental edging having its inner edge in abutting relation with the edge of the body-fabric, a stay-strip underlapping the abutted edge portions of the body-fabric and edging, an ornamental cover'ing thread looped back-and-forth across said abutted edge portions, and means for securing the body-fabric, edging, covering thread and stay-strip in their above defined relative positions.
2. An ornamental edge-finishing seam comprising a body fabric presenting an edge, a stay-strip applied to the under surface of the body-fabric and having its outer edge projecting beyond the edge of the bodyfabric, an ornamental edging having its inner edge disposed in abutting relation with the edge of the body-fabric, an embroidery thread looped back-and-forth in figure 8 fashion across the abutted edges of the bodyfabric and edging, and means for securing saided'ging, stay-strip and'cov'ering thread in their above defined relative positions:
3. An ornamental edge-finishing" seam comprising a body fabric presenting an edge, an ornamental edging arrangedwith its inner edge in abutting relation With the edge of the body-fabricyac'oi'erin-g thread looped back-and-forth across the line oi t'pdivision'between the body-fabrio' and edging at theuppe'i' side'of the seam, a' staystrip of said line of division, another" line' of stitches" passing through the inner row" of loops" of the co'yering thread th'e' body-fabric and the stay-strip'at the" opposite side of said line of division, and a third line of stitches passing through the body-fabric and inner marginal portion 1 of the 'stay 'strip'.
4. An ornamental"edge' finishing seam for sewed artioles eomprising, a body-fabric presenting an edge, an ornamental edging having its inner edge in abutting relation With the edge of the body-fabric, a staystrip having its outer marginal portion underlapping the abutted edge portions of the bodyfabric and edging; an l-nan'iemal covering thread looped b'aek an'd-forth aross said abutt ed edge portions; means" for securing the bo'dy-fabrio, edging, covering tli'r ea cl andou'ter marginal portion a of the stay strip in'ftheir above' defined relative position s; and means for securing the inner m'ar'gnia'l port on of the stay-strap to the body fabrio at a distance inwardly from the r -s'thr 'a 1 i a testimony Whereof I have signedmy name to this spetiifioationi ALBERT H: DE Von.
