My invention relates to a method of makin trimmings, edgings, analogous to fagoting for the adornment of articles of wearing apparel, etc., and relates particularly to a method of making a box pleat which is made as a single operation on a single machine.

Box pleats are used in skirts, shirts, and in decorative flounces for bed spreads, slip covers, and so forth. They are used in clusters. A full box pleat is folded under so that the under edges meet; and shallow box pleats that save material may be made with a shallow fold.

It is an object of my invention to provide an ornamental trimming or fagoting strip for a box pleat made in a single operation.

Another object of my invention is to provide a box pleat which is ornamental in appearance.

Another object of my invention is to manufacture a box pleat made in a single operation which has the appearance of fagoting, the latter being obtained by sewing two separate pieces of fabric together by a spaced stitch.

Other objects of my invention are to provide an improved trimming of the character described, that is easily and economically produced, and which is highly attractive in appearance.

With the above and related objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box pleat embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 3.

Fig. 3 is an end view of the box pleat as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a, sectional view of the fabric taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 5 is an end View of the appearance of the fabric as it is going through the machine.

Referring now in greater detail to the drawing wherein the box pleat may be used for skirts, shirts, and decorative fiounces for bedspreads, slip covers, aprons, and so forth, it is made on a machine wherein the box pleat is formed and stitched in a single operation as follows: the fabric A is folded to have two pleats or short overlapping folds B and C whose adjacent end Ii) forms one edge of each of the pleats, and then a row of stitches l2 goes through the open ends i4, I6 of the overlapping portions B and C to hold the overlapping portions B and C together.

A portion l8 of each stitch which is on the outside of the portions 20, 22 of the folds B, C respectively, is visible and appears as a portion of lattice work. In other words, when the folds B and C are folded so that the portions 20, 22 of the folds B, C are close to the main body of the fabric as illustrated in Fig. 1, then the closest two edges 20, 22 of the folds B and C appear to be held together by the spaced or lattice appearing row of stitches [2.

The box pleats as formed by a single machine operation which sews a single row of stitches between the open ends of the two folds of the main body of the fabric also has the pleats folded against the main body of the fabric.

The box pleats also are held together to give the appearance of fagoting for the adornment of articles of wearing apparel as aprons, dresses, and stitched household draperies, linens, etc.

The surface ornamentation of the box pleats and fagoting may employ narrow strip-like material such as tape, ribbon, and thread or yarn, of woven, knitted, braided or twisted texture.

Although my invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as being illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may be variously embodied, and the scope of the invention is to be determined as claimed.

I claim as my invention:

1. A fabric body having a portion containing four thicknesses providing an inner folded edge and a pair of outer folded edges, a series of stitches penetrating said four thicknesses adjacent said inner folded edge, said stitches holding said outer folded edges in spaced relationship with respect to said inner folded edge, whereby said outer folded edges can be separated to produce a box pleat with adjacent portions of said body.

2. A box pleat structure comprising a unitary body of fabric having a pair of adjacent spaced folded edges and a pair of remote folded edges defining two portions each having three thicknesses of material, one of said thicknesses bridging said adjacent edges, and a series of stitches penetrating each of said adjacent edges and extending externally of said one thickness transversely of said adjacent edges.

3. The method of forming a box pleat in a body of fabric comprising folding an intermediate portion of said fabric inwardly to produce four thicknesses having an inner folded edge and a pair of outer folded edges, stitching through said four thicknesses adjacent said inner edge, and separating said outer edges to lie substantially adjacent said body of fabric.
