HOT-WATER BOTTLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Anrrrorvso S. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Medford, in the county of MiddleseX and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in HotlVater Bottles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to hot water bottles and other containers and among other ob jects provides an improved stopper therefor.

While I have shown and described an improved stopper, which may be of use in many connections, the stopper as such, independent of the cooperating container, is not claimed in this application, but is claimed in a divisional application, Serial No. 131,9-12, filed Nov. 17, 1916.

The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the neck of a hot water bottle and a stopper therefor illustrating the invention;

Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the neck showing the stopper in side elevation; and

Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.

The hot water bottle proper may be similar to that disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,045,510, granted to me November 26, 1912, and comprises a body 1 of copper or other appropriate material preferably having its outer surface nickel plated. The neck for the body comprises an outer wall 8 and an inner wall 5 spaced therefrom to provide an ample air chamber between them. Vents 7 in the outer wall of the neck permit a ready circulation of air through said chamber to cool the same and prevent discomfort to the user in the holding and manipulation thereof. The outer wall may have a circumferential bead 9 to prevent the hand The upper end of the wall 13 'is provided with an outwardly projecting circumferential flange 17 having a depending lip 19 forming an annular recess beneath said flange. A packing washer 21 of rubber or other suitable material may be seated in this recess and may be secured therein by slightly upsetting or bending in the rim of the lip 19 if desired.

A cap 23 has a rim 25 seated on the body flange 17 anda depending lip 27 intimately embracing the flange lip 19. The lips may be tensioned somewhat when one is pressed into the other to assist in holding them together. The cap may have a central portion 27 pressed outward from its rim to contribute to the stiffness of the cap and add to the ornamei ital appearance thereof.

shoulder preferably has a circumferential rib 43 forming a seat adapted for tight fit with the washer.

The vented cooling chamber between the outer and inner walls of the neck is an important feature of the bottle. To further contribute to the cooling of the neck, the cap ofv the stopper may have vents 45 therein permitting the free circulation of air into the body of the stopper.

Heretofore the packings for the'stoppers of hot water bottles have been short lived and had to be frequently replaced owing to the destructive action of the hot water thereon. By my construction this objection has been obviated, since the washer is located adjacent the top of the stopper externally thereof, remote from the body of the hot water in the bottle, and the vents in the outer wall of the neck and in the cap of the stopper combine to maintain a circulation of cooling air on the walls receiving the washer.

It will be observed the stopper occupies and fills a substantial portion of the neck where if without provision for cooling the same, it would very substantially increase the temperature of the neck, but the ventilation thereof as described materially contributes to the maintaining of the neck at a temperature sufficiently low to permit the same to be comfortably grasped by the hand.

The body, cap and handle may all be readily died from sheet material and the body and cap may be pressed into their proper form and assembled in few and simple operations with a small expenditure of material.

lVhile the stopper has been described herein more particularly with reference to its use in hot water bottles, it will be understood its field of use is not restricted thereto.

Having described one illustrative embodiment of the invention without limiting the same thereto, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. 2. A container having a neck comprising an outer vented wall, and an. inner wall spaced therefrom formed to present a circumferential seat, in combination with a stopper threaded to said inner wall and having a packing washer adapted for engagement with said seat.

A container having a neck comprising an outer wall and an inner wall spaced therefrom formed to present a' circumferential seat, in combination with a stopper having a body threaded to said inner wall, a packing washer embracing said body for engagement with said seat, and a cap for said dy, aid outer wall and said cap having" provision for cooling said washer.

4. A container having a neck comprising an outer wall 3 and an inner wall 5 spaced therefrom to provide a cooling chamber be tween them, said inner wall being formed to present a circumferential seat 43, in combination with a stopper having a body 11 threaded to said inner wall, a packing washer 21 encircling said body for engagement with said seat, and a handle 29, said neck and stopper having vents 7 and 45 for cooling the parts.
